Lauderhill developed rapidly during the 1840s due to its location within easy driving distance of Jacksonville and its expanding economy as a center for cotton production. By 1850, there were over 400 residents living in Lauderhill Township with businesses such as a drugstore, bakery, millinery shop and groceries located along US-1 or near major intersections such as State Road 7 (now US-1A) and SR 98 (now SR 98M). During this time period notable landmarks included the old “Lauder Hills” plantation house which still stands today; Haley’s Mill; Confederate General Robert E Lee’s headquarters during his ill-fated retreat from Yorktown; the original Laurens County Courthouse which still stands today; Lauderdale Baptist Church (); Driggs School (); First Presbyterian Church (); Lauderdale Masonic Temple (); Atlantic Mail Depot (). Many of these structures remain significant reminders of witness to local history while others have been replaced or modified over time.
