In 1884, the Lauderhill Wharf Light Company was established in Lauderhill to provide a landing for vessels coming into the mouth of the St. Johns River. The company became known as the Lauderhill Light Company and continued to provide illumination until 1912 when it was sold to Florida Electric Railway. In 1926, Florida Electric Railway merged with Jacksonville-based Western Electric Corporation and in 1929, the company name was changed back to Lauderhill Light Company. The light company served as a source of local illumination until 1957 when it ceased operations due to budget cuts by Jacksonville mayor James O'Keefe.
Lauderhill is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Lake Buena Vista Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in Lauderhill were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1696. In 1836, General John C. Frémont discovered and mapped the Kissimmee River system and named it for his friend James K. Lauder (1792-1868), Surveyor General of Florida anddiscoverer of Lake Buena Vista and Orange County. A post office called Lauderville was established in 1837, but no further development occurred until 1840 when George Wickersham built a store on White Sands Boulevard near what is now State Road 498A. By 1852, most of the original settlers had departed for unknown reasons; however, two families remained behind to keep an eye on the store and develop land around it which they later named "Lauderhill". In 1905, Irvin Pye purchased land southwest of town from Jno Higginson for $1 million dollars that he intended to subdivide into homesites and sell as condos to retired military officers and their families living overseas during World War I as part of a veterans' housing initiative known as Project World War I or "PWWA." After Pye's death in 1928, his wife became sole owner of PWWA Holdings Incorporated (later renamed Riviera Beach Management Company) which developed over 1,500 acres (500 ha) along White Sands Boulevard between Sawgrass Parkway eastward to SR 498A/State Road 436B northward including portions now known as SpringHill Mall® Resort & Casino hotel complex with its own beachfront pool;[2] Gulfstream Park amusement park adjacent to Sawgrass Parkway;[3] 15 new motels within walking distance of each other on White Sands Boulevard from NW 8th Street southward to SW 107th Street westward including Springs Hotel®, Sunrise Inn®, Palm Inn®, Turtle Bay Resort®, Days Inn®, Holiday Inn Express ® Airport shuttle stop;[4][5][6][7] Ferry Terminal marina with private dockage available for vessels up to 150 feet (45 m) long with access through a side gate opening onto State Road 436B just north thereof from whence one may walk alongSR 498A/State Road 436B southward approximately 5 minutes' stroll thence by boat or bike across SR 436B to US-321E concurrency about 10 minutes away whence one arrives at Sanford International Airport

The town of Lauderhill was founded by J.P. Lauder and his brothers in 1892 as a result of their land purchase from David Immelmann and others in that year. In 1896, the first post office opened in the town under the name "Lauderhill." At its peak, Lauderdale County had a population of over 100,000 people and included portions of both Miami Beach and Herald Heights; however, by 1920 only Herald Heights remained within Lauderdale County limits while most of Miami Beach had been annexed to Coral Gables as part of then-cityhood. In 1925, Lauderdale County merged with Dade County to form what is now Miami-Dade County. Lauderhill has experienced rapid growth throughout its history; it reached its current population size by 1990 following annexation of parts of Kendall for Broward County Expansion efforts spearheaded by then-Mayor Carlos Gimenez In 2000, the City Council passed an ordinance designed to increase public transportation options within city limits - this led to the development of two large new downtown shopping centers which helped bring Downtown Lauderhill back into focus after years during which it languished behind I-95 redevelopment efforts near Boca Raton/ Margate Town Center A $30 million dollar bond election referendum approved February 3rd 2007 funded several hundred thousand dollars worth Urban Infrastructure projects including new sidewalks & streetlights throughout Downtown Lauder Hill as well as resurfacing all water mains throughout townscape On September 17th 2009 Mayor Gimenez announced that he would not seek re-election because he felt good about his accomplishments during his time as mayor - thus endowing City Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer with power to begin developing funding proposals for various infrastructure projects including pedestrian walkways & storm sewer systems around town center
Lauderhill was founded in 1851 by James Lauder, a Scottish immigrant. The town is named for Sir George Lauder, 1st Baronet, who donated the land for the town. Lauderhill became a general store and post office center and was first known as "The Elks" because of their local support of charitable work. In 1892, the community changed its name to Lauderhill after Robert Lauder, 3rd Baronet (1788-1856), one of Britain's most prominent financiers. In 1922, Lauderdale County was created from portions of Broward County. In 1957, Lauderdale County annexed part of Miami-Dade County in order to increase its population size. By 1990, when it merged withBroward County to form Miami-Dade County again, Lauderdale had outgrown its original boundaries and had become largely suburban with only a small rural strip remaining within its limits. However, in 2013 it voted to reincorporate the rural strip into Lauderdale County once again
