By 1950, however, industrial growth had stopped and retail development began to pick up as more people started moving into the area to work in these new businesses. In recent years, both residential and commercial development have resumed with much of the current population consisting of retirees or young families who move there every year for their summer homes or retirement incomes. Lauderhill was founded in 1892 by two brothers, George Lauder and John Lauder. The name comes from Lauderdale Heights on Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. The first post office was established in 1893 in what is now Lauderhill. The first store opened on November 25, 1893 by Wm Aiken and Bros., which became the center of town's retail economy until it closed its doors in 1957. In 1912 the community annexed that of Boca Raton to form a single municipality with a population of over 100 people. In 1928 the City Council approved plans to build a new Civic Center which would include an arena for ice hockey and basketball as well as other uses including housing for employees of local businesses and government buildings. Construction began on October 15, 1929 but due to World War II no games were played at the original rink because it was used as military barracks during the war effort. For many years after World War II there were no major events or activities associated with Lauderhill due to its status as a ghost town; however this changed when developer David Jaffe purchased land adjacent to his later development called "The Pines" (now known as "The Ridge") and began planning an mixed-use development that would include both professional sports teams (the Miami Heat) and high end residences/commercial spaces along with public amenities such as libraries, schools and parks
