Some residents continue to commute into neighboring towns for work or other activities; however, most residents now live within walking distance of their homes or shops within downtown Lauderdale Lakes if desired. There are also numerous parks available for recreational use including: Park Lane Golf Course & Spa (.8 miles west of town), Clearwater Bayou Preserve (.5 miles east of town), Sunrise Trails (.2 miles north of town), One Mile Island (.3 miles northwest of town), Lake Worth Marina (.7 miles southwest of town), Sunrise Park (.9 miles southeast oftown), and Glades National Wildlife Refuge ().

Lauderdale Lakes is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–The Woodlands Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lauderdale Lakes was founded on November 3, 1903 by developers J.C. Nichols and Frank Suttles as a streetcar suburb of Fort Lauderdale. The name "Lauderdale" comes from Lauderdale Plantation near downtown Fort Lauderdale where land for the city was bought in 1892. The first post office opened in 1907 and the town became incorporated on February 15, 1912. In 1932, when Miami Beach annexed Lauderdale Lakes as its new annexe, it also annexed all of unincorporated Dania Beach east of I-95 to form what is now Miami Beach – Dania Beach Census Place ZIP Code 33314. This annexation created an urban area with a total population of over 100,000 people that included both Lauderdale Lakes and Dania Beach proper for the first time ever! In 1973, after many years of planning by then Mayor Harry Reidy and his predecessor Edward Koch (the namesake), construction began on what would become one of South Florida's most iconic landmarks: From Lighthouse Point Road to I-95 there were two high rises built which still stand today – One at 553 feet (183 metres) and the other at 624 feet (187 metres). In 1978 Hurricane Andrew destroyed both structures but they have been rebuilt with more glass and are now tourist attractions themselves! As one of only three towns in South Florida without any expressways connecting it to Downtown Miami or any other major metropolitan areas outside Broward County – residents had to rely on funiculars and buses to get around until finally a new expressway was completed in 1992 that runs directly through Lauderdale Lakes! Today’s economy relies heavily upon tourism as well as housing developments such as “The Villages” that straddle I-95 between Fort Lauderdale & Pompano Beach
Lauderdale Lakes was founded in 1881 by Captain John Lauderdale and his wife, Elizabeth. The lakes were named for the counties in which they were located - Douglas, Leon, Pinellas, and Hillsborough. In 1916, the Lauderdale family sold their interest in the lakes to a group of friends who renamed them "Lauderdale Lakes State Park".
