In 1964, Philander Dyson purchased Suncoast Telephones from Julius Reuter for $30 million dollars and made it his personal investment enterprise—the first publicly traded telecommunications company in America. With its new headquarters building on Orange Avenue in downtown Kissimmee, Telecom quickly became one of the most successful companies in america with operations worldwide including service outposts in Australia (Etihad Airways), Canada (Bell Canada), Mexico City (Alianza Azul), Peru (Cabellera de Chile), Jamaica (British American Tobacco Limited) and Spain's former colonies - Colombia (Telefónica Iberia SA) and Venezuela (Tecnología para el Desarrollo Sustentable SA)—establishing partnerships with other industry leaders around the globe before being acquired by Time Warner Communications Inc., owner of HBO/HBO Radio Networks subsidiary Time Warner Cable Systems Inc., during their acquisition of AOL Time Warner outright in 1996 for US$4 billiondollar . Lauderdale Lakes was established in 1892 as a small town on the bank of the St. Johns River. The name came from Lauderdale, Alabama, where James K. Polk had been born in 1839. The lake was named after Lauderdale County, Florida which was created in 1905 from parts of Monroe and Leon counties. In 1922, the County seat of Lauderdale Lakes was moved to Fort Myers and the town became a part of that city. In 1959, Fort Myers seceded from Miami-Dade County and became its own county. The towns of Lauderdale Lakes and Plantation were merged intoFort Myers in 1966 and remain there today.
