The name Lauderdale Lakes comes from two different sources: Lauderdale Creek and Lauderdale Heights. The creek was named for Captain John Lauderdale, who explored it in 1788 while serving as lieutenant colonel on HMS "Pompadour". The Heights were built by Colonel James A. Baldwin in 1877 to house his troops during the Seminole Wars. In 1892 when citrus crops failed due to freezes, surveyors recommended that there be a town called "Lauderdale Lakes" because of its proximity to Kissimmee Lake and its potential for irrigation water supply. The first post office was established at Lauderdale Lakes on November 7, 1893 under the name of West Palm Beach. In 1896, residents voted to change the name to Larkfield after purchasing land opposite Kissimmee Lake from Wm Hite and others. When Larkfield was incorporated as a city in 1907, it had a population of only 100 people; however, since then it has grown rapidly with annexations from other towns in Volusia County including DeLand (1924), Plantation (1929), Hollywood (1933), Sunrise (1945) and Melbourne (1966). During World War II many members of the military lived and worked near the intersection of State Road 441/SR-441B which led into downtown Larkspur through an area now known as Military Road 614/SR-614A. This area became known as Camp Grant after General Dwight D Eisenhower's headquarters during World War II when he oversaw all U.S Army forces within range of Jacksonville Beach including Fort Pierce Naval Shipyard located adjacent to Camp Grant on Merritt Island off Boca Raton beach which became known as MacArthur Gulf following General Douglas MacArthur's victory over Japan at Iwo Jima in 1945 During postwar years much development occurred near Kennedy Boulevard between US-4 and SR-441B with large shopping centers developments such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney, Macy's Inc., Woolworths Inc., Safeway Inc., Kroger Super Markets Incorporated along with numerous smaller stores throughout what is now Downtown Larkspur complete with its own ZIP code
