In 1906, the Broward County Sheriff's department imported an automatic rifle from France specifically for their use in Law Enforcement Patrol operations. A few years later, the National Firearms Act (NFA) was passed and this provided the legal groundwork for the commercial production and distribution of firearms within the United States. On July 2, 1912, Fenton Park Shooting Gallery owner George "Doc" Brown began sling shots with his 12 gauge shotgun at a public targets range located on Northwest 8th Street in Lauderdale Lakes. The following year, Brown published "The Art of Shotgun Slinging," which detailed his techniques for firing projectiles with a shotgun using both left-handed and right-handed shooters. In 1915, Doc Brown founded "The Gun Slinger," which became one of the most successfullated Shotgun Slinging Clubs in North America. During World War I, "Gun Slinger" sponsored live target shooting sessions at various parks throughout Broward County.Throughout these years there were numerous attempts by individuals to improve or spread the knowledge of shotgun slinging among those who would do so. In 1937 Agnes McCarthy organized a conference on Shotgun Slinging at Fort Pierce Beach Hotel & Casino where she demonstrated how to shoot accurately with her Winchester Model 1897 slugging rifle over distances up to 100 yards using just two rounds per shot from either side of her stock rifle stock during multiple25-round magazine clips fired from prone position while stationary

It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Dade Combined Statistical Area. The CDP was created on February 15, 1990 when South Dade Township and Lauderdale Manor were merged to form Broward County. Lauderdale Lakes is located in northeastern Broward County adjacent to Interstates 95 and 51. The name derives from Lake Worth Boulevard which runs through the community. Laurinborough Park is also in Lauderdale Lakes. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,569 people, 2,814 households, and 1,912 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 459 people per square mile (175/km²). There were 3,027 housing units at an average density of 191/sq mi (75/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 84% White; 11% African American; 2% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 5% from two or more races.
