In 2002, Sears Holdings Corporation acquired Kmart from Searsredevelopment Ventures LLC which led to the closure of Kmart once again within months of its opening date when it merged with Sears Incorporated In 2013, plans were announced to build a second mall adjacent to existing Lauderdale Lakes Shopping Center with anchor tenants including Macy's department store and Coleman Coliseum Sportatorium which will be known as The Glencore/Macy's Place mall . Lauderdale Lakes is a census-designated place in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville metropolitan area. The name Lauderdale Lakes comes from two nineteenth century plantations: Lauderdale Plantation and Lauderdale Station. The plantation was founded by Captain John Laughlin and his wife Martha Walton Laughlin on their cotton plantation in 1836. In 1892, developers James Troup and Lucius Burch bought the plantation from the Walton family for $1 million cash. They renamed it Lauderdale Lakes after one of their own families - James' father's maternal grandfather had owned a plantation in Mobile Bay called Lauderdale Plantation before moving to Tallahassee in Alabama to become Governor of that state. At first, they only ran this plantation as a summer home for themselves but soon began marketing it as a winter tourist destination with ski slopes, golf courses, and lakeside cabins available for purchase or rent during the winter season (the first resort opened in 1923). Lauderdale Lakes Resort officially opened its doors on February 12th of that year with President Cleveland visiting dignitaries including senators William McKinley and Daniel Webster along with Mrs. Cleveland who officiated at the opening ceremonies which were also attended by then Mayor Frank Broyles Jr., members of Congress Hal Seawright (R-Fla.), J.P Morgan Chase National Bank Vice President Arthur Blissner (J), Admiral David Dixon Porter USN (D), Drury Lane Theater chain vice president Robert Wills (W) and future UFL football coach Bobby Bowden among other guests In 1984 Miami Hurricane running back Don Shula hosted a private party there celebrating Dolphins' victory over New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium
