Lauderdale Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located on the border of Palm Beach and Miami counties. Lauderdale Lakes was founded as a town in 1925 by developer Earle C. Lauderdale and his wife Nellie Bogan Lauderdale. They named their new town after Lauderdale's brother-in-law, Rufus Fenton Keyes, who had purchased land east of Lake Worth in 1922 for $1 million. It became an incorporated municipality in 1948 with a population of 755 residents. In 1990 it annexed adjacent unincorporated areas to its borders with Palm Beach County and Miami Dade County for a total population of 11,717 people. In 2000 the municipality changed its name to Lauderdale Lakes after annexation into Miami Dade County resulted in an increase in population density to over 100 people per square mile from under 50 people per square mile within Broward County limits before that year. The current mayor is Alaric Higgins with term expiration set for 2020; he succeeded Mayor Rick Scott who resigned effective January 1, 2019 due to term limits set by state law that were not comply

The first store in Lauderdale Lakes was opened by Mr. Fenton in 1916. By 1917, there were two stores open in Lauderdale Lakes and nine businesses had been started within a year. In 1922, when it became a part of Miami, the population of Lauderdale Lakes was 2,500 people and it had 20 businesses. In 1925, Drury's Department Store opened its doors in Lauderdale Lakes and soon thereafter other stores followed suit such as Piggly Wiggly Stores whichopened its doors on December 15th 1926 and lasted until 1960 By 1933 there were 25 businesses operating in Lauderdale Lakes with a population of over 1,000 people In 1938 Drury's Department Store closed its doors for good after being bought out by JCPenney which continued to operate the store until 1961 The annexation of Lauderdale Lakes into Miami did not mean an end to business activity as several small businesses continued to operate until after World War II when many businesses closed due to increased competition from larger stores . After World War II most businesses shut down except for one which continued operations as JCPenney department store
Lauderdale Lakes was first settled in 1851 by settlers from Georgia. It became a community in 1865 when it was attached to the town of Fort Walton Beach. The population of Lauderdale Lakes grew rapidly after the opening of the Panama Canal and its subsequent growth in trade gave rise to new businesses, such as a flour mill, meat market, and hotel. In 1927, Lauderdale Lakes became an enclave within Fort Walton Beach. By 1959, it had attained city status and lost its annexation with Fort Walton Beach. The population decreased until 2000, when it reached its current level.
