Largo, FL is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. It was founded in 1881 by Captain John Largo and his family. In 1907, Largo came up with the idea of developing the area into an amusement park called The Lakeshore. The first amusement park opened in Largo in 1907 and it was called The Lakeshore Park. After the park closed down in 1928, Largo developed another amusement park called Floridian Park which also closed down in 1928. However, Floridian Park is still used as a golf course today. In 1931, Colonel Ernest Hemingway vacationed at Largo and he became interested in its history. He started writing articles about the town and its people for magazines such as Life and Scribner's Magazine. In 1938, colonel Hemingway built a house near the intersection of US-1 and US-4 to live in while he wrote For Whomthe Bell Tolls. When World War II began, he decided to move back to Spain but left all his belongings behind at Largo so that everyone could keep them during the war. After World War II ended, Largo experienced some growth due to its proximity to Tampa Bay. There were several new businesses established here including Coca ColaCola Bottling Company (later PepsiCo), Anheuser-Busch Brewery ( later Busch Gardens), Myntra Wireless Corporation (later Sprint) and others over the years. However, many of these businesses failed due to difficult economic times throughout most of the 20th century; however they are still around today thanks to their connections with local businesses or other companies that have been acquired by them over time or merged into larger organizations. The population of Largo peaked at 17 hundred residents around 1970 but has slowly declined since then due primarily to migration from surrounding counties within Polk County as well as Miami Beach which has become much more populous since then; however there remain a few thousand people living in or near Largo today despite this decrease}. Some notable landmarks located near or within walking distance of downtown include: Hernando Cabeza de Vaca Elementary School (), Stonington Baptist Church (), First Baptist Church () and Bishop Gorman Catholic Cathedral ().
