In 1892, Largo became the first city in Florida to have a school for rifle shooting. The first rifle range was built on the now demolished old post office building that served as the city's municipal center from 1892-1920. Rifle shooters from all over started coming to Largo to use this range and practice their skills. As recreational shooting began to become popular in Florida, the city built two more ranges: one in 1922 and one in 1933. In 1949, Largo added a shotgun range and began using it as an adjunct of its rifle program. Today, rifle shootings are still conducted at the old post office building as part of pistol training events throughout the year.
Largo is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Filton Micropolitan Statistical Area. Largo is located on the Gulf of Mexico just east of the mouth of the St. Johns River and immediately adjacent to Mobile Bay. There are several references to Largo in history dating back to 1821 when French traders named it "L'Aigle" after an eagle that had been killed near Baton Rouge. There have also been references to Largo since 1845 when Spanish pilots used it as a landing spot for their exploration of Mobile Bay. In 1856, Colonel John Troup discovered oil seeps in what is now Largo and became interested in using them for commercial purposes; however, he died before any development could take place. In 1868 Lieutenant George Haggard landed his ship "George Washington" at Largo Cove while exploring Mobile Bay for oil wells; this event helped spur pioneer settlement around Largo Cove. In 1898 Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of the townships along both banks of the St Johns River within Escambia County - including much of what is now Largo - leaving behind only a few huts and farms scattered among sand dunes and scrub oak trees outside the town limits today. However, people were already living in scattered communities throughoutEscambia County by this point due to its high degree of productivity from farming (a result of warm water retention) combined with ample natural resources such as coal, phosphate rock, timber and seafood nurseries dotting its coastline which made it an ideal location for plantation agriculture during Reconstruction years following America's Civil War (1861-1865). This period also saw dramatic changes in economic fortunes across Alabama due largely to railroads coming into play connecting Atlanta with points west; these new opportunitiesledto increased wealth and investment within Escambia County which led some farmers to move into areas like Largo where they could enjoy good production sans big cities nearby while others decided against moving because they didn't think their land would be taken up by railroads again soon enough. Today there are over 150 businesses licensed or regulated by state or federal agencies occupying more than 26 acres inside City Limits boundaries - making it one of Florida's fastest growing municipalities! The first stop on travelers' journey from northcentral Florida through Escambia County was Jacksonville then Tampa before continuing west through Gainesville until reaching Pensacola late summertime each year around Labor Day weekend; thus beginning what has become known as Floridian travel season! By 1954, however, Largo had lost its mystique and decline began noticeable. As a result, many of Largo's cultural artifacts have been preserved in local museums since then.
Largo was founded by General James L. Steele in 1821 as a citrus town on the mouth of the St. Johns River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1848 it had outgrown its original boundaries and become an all-encompassing commercial center on the north side of the river. In 1851, Steele organized what would become Broward County, Florida under a new government plan that gave political power to counties rather than to city-counties. Largo quickly became one of Broward's most important economic and social centers. The town also became home to two of Florida's first high schools, Largo High School and Ft. Lauderdale Baptist College (nowbroward college).
