On December 16, 1868, Congress passed and President Andrew Johnson signed into law the Morrill Act which provided for land titles to be allotted among various tribes in Indian Territory west of Arkansas River including much of what is now Escambia County and Brevard County . On January 1st 1870 local officials met to organize new townships within Escambia County and voted to name their new community "Largo". After a few months more discussion it was decided that this change should not take effect until after Christmas so as not to offend those living in nearby Pensacola who were alreadychristmas-themed; they changed their name back to "Pensacola" on December 25th 1870 officially becoming one community once again.
