The history of Largo, Florida dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, the area was home to a number of Native American tribes and their villages. In 1825, residents of this small town petitioned Congress for land in what is now Tampa Bay. The request was granted and Largo was founded on the site of present-day Sunnyside Drive. By 1830, Largo had a population of around 100 people. Largo's growth continued during the years following its founding and by 1880 it had reached 1,000 people. The town prospered thanks to its new water supply from springs nearby and its location on a major shipping route between Tampa and St Petersburg. During World War II, Largo played an important role in the Battle of Tampa Bay. On December 14th, 1942, Japanese forces attacked several U.S naval vessels in Tampa Bay with devastating results; five ships were sunk while thirty-six others were damaged or destroyed. This battle is considered one of the largest engagements fought by United States Navy warships during World War II. Despite its wartime importance, however, Largo experienced relatively low levels of population growth during the rest of the 20th century; only two other municipalities located within Hillsborough County achieved populations over 500 residents during this time period (Orlando and Live Oak). However, recent demographic changes have begun to reverse this trend: Over the past decade alone (2007-2011), Largo has seen an increase in both population and employment – as well as development opportunities in key areas such as business incubation and entertainment districts acrosstown from downtown Largo

Largo is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Largo was founded in 1892 when the railroad built a station there on its way to St Petersburg. The name comes from Largo Point on the north shore of Clearwater Bay and from "Largo" (a Spanish word meaning "a place for selling goods") because it was an early post office and store there. The first settlers were people who had come down from Georgia across the bay to look for land after being driven out of their original homes by Seminoles. After five years of searching they located a tract of land that could be used as a penal colony and named their new settlement Largo after one of its founders, James Auld Largie. In 1892, Tampa Bay became part of the United States and in 1918 Largo became separate from Pinellas County. In 1959, it merged with Manatee County to form Sarasota-Manatee County government under then Governor Lawton Chiles Jr.. On January 1, 2007, following statehood within Florida as a result of Amendment 2 (the 2006 U.S. Census), Largo reverted back to its former name: Pinellas County Government headquarters annexing much needed acreage for public use adjacent to downtown which has been leased by Pinellas Park District since 2000 providing more than 350 acres (1 km²) open space primarily composed of wetlands that are home to over 1 million waterfowl each year; contains over 50 cultural sites including several museums; boasts world class golf courses such as Ponte Vedra Beach Resort Golf Course & Senior Club - #7; John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum complex also includes 5 tennis courts - #6; an arena capable seating up to 4Killion people called Gulf Arena now home to USF Bulls men’s basketball team playing their home games at night along with concerts by country music artists annually drawing large crowds during spring break weekdays
Largo was a small community on the Indian River in central Florida. It was founded by Spanish settlers in the early 1800s. The community acquired its name from its location on Largo Key, which is a peninsula located near the mouth of the Indian River. Largo lost its status as a town after it was annexed by Jacksonville in 1884.
