Largo was founded in 1847 by pioneers of the railroad industry. The town rapidly became a center for cotton shipping and manufacturing, including a major cotton gin and textile plant. Largo's growth led to the formation of several civic organizations and local businesses, such as the Largo Waterworks and Electric Light Company, Largo Bank, Largo Manufacturing Company, and Largo School District. In 1924, the town annexation made it an official municipality.
