Largo, Florida is a town located in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Largo is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,531 at the 2010 census. Largo is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home toDuval County's only high school, Largo High School. The city was founded by settlers in 1881 and incorporated as a town on November 6, 1922. It was renamed after officeholder Gouverneur Morris Largo on October 1, 1950. The area now known as Largo was first settled by pioneers in 1881 after they arrived from Georgia looking for land to farm. In 1915 the community had a population of 100 and consisted of about 10 homes and two businesses. By 1925 there were only 12 residents living in what became today’s downtown area; however due to its location near Jacksonville Municipal Airport and access to railroad tracks it continued to serve as an agricultural center until the early 1960s when all but one business closed down because of competition from better-located cities such as Jacksonville or Port St Lucie. In 1920 Gouverneur Morris Largo purchased a piece of land east of present day Duval Street which served as his initial headquarters for his new town idea dubbed “Largo” after then-Senator Gouverneur Morris himself The original development plan called for a small town with just over 500 residents that would be located along Clinton Avenue running from the edge of Jacksonville Municipal Airport northeast towards Fort Myers Beach and west towards Pompano Beach However due to World War II military production being centered in Jacksonville instead of Duval County and changing needs within the industry later that decade much acreage within what would become known as Largo were developed into housing subdivisions including Sunrise Boulevard/Dolphin Drive (later Dolphin Place), Kennedy Boulevard/Citizens Way (later Towne Center Road), Gulfstream Drive/Gulfstream Place (now Gulfstream Highway) , Belle Haven Drive(later Belle Haven Place), Serenity Dr[now Harborview Dr] (later Harborview Heights) . Development continued throughinto the 1970s with significant brick building construction taking place throughout most of downtown becoming one large modernist architecture showroom district complete with high rise apartments blocks facing inland waterways which continue into current day . Today most residential areas have been annexed back into Duval City limits while commercial districts are located around Interstate 95 south & northbound lanes between US 41 & I-95 North . There are still some intact older buildings dating back to before WWII dotting parts of downtown such as State House Park across from US 41
