They founded what is now known as Largo Plantation on a tract of land that would later be called Rancho de las Pulgas. In 1841, Largo's first school opened with 11 students and instruction was given by African American teachers from Jacksonville. In 1865, after surveys revealed an increased demand for goods and services in Largo due to its strategic location near railroad tracks and other points of interest; Largo became a town. The first mayor was James Worthy and the first store owner was David Bigham. In 1895, Largo Elevator Company built their first elevator which quickly became one of the most successful businesses in town. In 1916 they built their second elevator which still stands today as one of the oldest elevators in Florida! In 1925, when Orange County announced its intention to create an incorporated municipality; Largo chose not to join but did provide services such as police department and fire department until 1951 when incorporation happened without their participation Largo experienced some growth during World War II with numerous companies manufacturing munitions here including Pan American Bombing Products (PABE) who built two plants here between 1942-1945
