Largo is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. Largo is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located on the southern side of Jacksonville and is bordered to the north by Stonington and to the east by Neptune Beach. It is maligned for its high murder rates but also has some of the highest median incomes in Duval County. The name "Largo" was derived from a combination of "largo" - meaning long - and "gora" - meaning beach or strand - which are both found in its geography. The first settlers arrived around 1881, when Captain Augustus Hogg sailed his schooner Ayer into what is now Largo Harbor on November 12th with 86 passengers and goods including three masts of sugar cane he had brought overland from Cuba. After landing here on December 5th, Hogg named his new town after himself, Largo (Spanish for long beach). On July 1st, 1907 another group of Englishmen landed at Largo Harbor with similar cargo but different intentions: they were looking for a place to build their own trading post as they were travelling through Florida along the Gulf Coast looking for new land to settle. They named their new outpost Fort Donelson after General Andrew Jackson's victory over British forces at New Orleans two years earlier. At first only men could stay there because there wasn't enough room for womenfolk on board ship; however this soon changed when word spread about how nice it would be to have access to an excellent beachfront location that also allowed them easy access to food and other amenities ashore while away from home. In 1926 Largo incorporated as a village under the name Donelson Village; however due to financial problems it reverted back to its original name within two years later when all remaining property became part of Jacksonville Township which continues today as our municipal district

Largo is a town in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Naples–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. Largo is one of two towns in Collier County (the other being Naples) that are both unincorporated areas and have no legal rights to tax dollars. Largo was founded on December 16, 1892 by J.N. McConnell and his wife Fannie Grimes McConnell as a farming community on the banks of the Stono River about 9 miles east of modern-day Naples.[1] Even though it had no legal status as a town, Largo prospered economically because its citizens were able to buy goods and services from other residents in the surrounding villages through bartering or trade.[2] In 1912, Largo became a separate municipality when it annexed parts of nearby Fort Myers.[3] In 1920, Largo voted to become an incorporated city with its own government under Mayor Harry Hixon[4]. However, this proposal failed to gain support from the county commissioners so it never came into effect. In 1984, Largo voters passed an ordinance annexing portions of neighbouring Fort Myers into their municipal boundaries; this annexation led to increased economic development within Largo due to increased competition for jobs within Fort Myers and more opportunities for businesses to compete with each other in neighboring municipalities. Today, many locals consider themselves " downtowners ",[5][6] although they still rely heavily on their village roots for social activities and shopping purposes
Largo was founded in 1892 by J.M. Largo, a cattle rancher and developer. The town was named for the large stands of palm trees located near the original town site. Largo became a major agricultural center during the early 20th century, thanks to its location on the banks of the Apalachicola River. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as Allied forces relocated to nearby Pensacola and Mobile Bay for military service. After the war, Largo slowly declined until it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, the city has undergone several revitalization efforts, including a new downtown district that opened in 2010 and a new light rail system that will be completed in 2019.
