Barnum named his new community after himself – "Largo" – inspired by his previous business ventures including horse-drawn carriages (the first such service to be offered in South Florida) throughout Europe and North America which he had visited with his wife Mina while on honeymoon in 1883–84). The first permanent residents arrived in 1898 when John Waddell moved from Fort Lauderdale with his son Clarence to live near what would become Downtown Largo proper; they erected a cabin on property that still stands today near Third Street SW between Second Avenues NE and NW corner of Seventh Ave NE behind City Hall Annex building.. Largo, Florida is a small town in Broward County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by J. D. Largo as a stop on the Jacksonville-Orlando Railroad. The population of Largo was 2,500 at the time of its incorporation. Largo's first store was built on the corner of Pine and Lauderdale streets in 1892. The business prospered and by 1912 had two stores and a post office. In 1916 Largo had a school, library, and two churches; one with Methodism services and one Presbyterian service. In 1922 Largo became an incorporated municipality which included all of today's south side of downtown along Broward Boulevard east to I-95 (then U.S.) Highway 1 (now I-595) north to State Road 753 (now Sunrise Drive). The name change came about because at that time it was felt that "Largoland" would be more popular than "Broward County". By 1925 there were four businesses in Largo: three stores and one hotel; one doctor, Pharmacy & Drug Store; two churches - Methodist Episcopal with services on Saturday mornings from 9am to 12pm into the late afternoon until 4pm then Presbyterian with services from 9am to 3pm; Waffle House operated by Mrs Wallis Robinson for many years until it closed in 1978 due to fire code violations; and gasoline stations located at Broward Boulevard intersections off FM 1410 (now US 1) served mostly by farmers during blustery days when fuel wasn't available from local suppliers or dealers down street
