Lantana is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 753 as of the 2010 census. It has been estimated that Lantana may have a population of over 1,000 people. Lantana began as an agricultural community on the banks of the Miami River in what is now downtown Lantana. In 1875, James A. Lovejoy purchased 640 acres (252 hectares) of land adjacent to present-day Interstate 5 and built a home called "The Oaks". The first store in Lantana was opened by Mrs. Anna Crain in 1888. By 1912 there were six stores and four hotels in town combined with dependable transportation by boat or train to all points eastward on the Miami River which connected at then known as Federal Road (now I-595). In 1922, Wilt Chamberlain bought 8 acres (3 ha) of land adjoining present day State Road 521 near mile marker 24 and named it "Chamberlain Park". On November 15th, 1924, Chamberlain dedicated this park after himself and his parents who had expended many hours working on its construction from their home on 117th Street Northeast in Washington Heights, New York City while he attended college at Columbia University. When Wilt Chamberlain retired from professional basketball he donated most of the money used for park development to charity. In 1952 Lantana had two convenience stores - one on Main Street and one across US Highway 27 from Municipal Airport - followed by Three Rivers Market & Grill which operated until 1984 when it closed up shop due to lack of business; also Shutters Pizza which opened in 1973 lasted until 1978 before closing too because no one wanted pizza indoors during wintertime After years of stagnation local residents reached out to developers Craig Tatum and Don Byers for new ideas for revitalization including plans for a shopping center with cultural attractions such as art galleries/museums/theater etc., housing developments with attached restaurants/bars etc., truck farming operations including hog raising within walking distance (later this became known as "Lanta" Farms), water treatment plants along I-5 – all without success until finally Mayor Joe Carollo approached developer Harry Tran about developing what would become today's downtown area around I-595 south side between 6th Ave NE & 7th Ave NE with office buildings/residential units above ground level; this eventually led to annexation by South Miami Beach intoMiami-Dade County effective January 1st 1976

Lantana, Florida is located in the Panhandle of Florida and is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg metropolitan area. It was founded on November 3, 1853 by General James K. Polk as Fort Brooke during the Seminole Wars. The name comes from Lantana Creek which flows through the town. The first store in Lantana was built by Wm Hargrave and Jno Copley in 1854. A post office was established at Lantana on January 1, 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on May 14, 1915. The first school in Lantana was built by Mrs. Catharine Welsh and operated for one year before being closed due to lack of students. A second school opened in 1870 and continued operation until it was also discontinued on May 14, 1915. A Masonic lodge was organized at Lantana on February 15, 1871 with Geo Bickerton as its first Master Mason. It continued operations until it disbanded on October 30, 1916 due to a lack of members unable to attend meetings each month or travel to meet up with other lodges around the state or country). An agricultural society (the Floridian Agricultural Society)was organized at Lantana on April 25,1872 with Capt Fenton as its first President and Mrs Gertrude Ewing as Secretary/Treasurer/Finance Director/. The society conducted farm trials throughout the state starting from early spring through late fall every year and collected data about crops along with prices collected from farmers during that time period for use by county agents who delivered technical reports back to Plantation Commissioners.. In 1875 an addition road were laid out connecting Waterloo Road near Clearwater Beach eastward intersecting US 41 just north of present day Holland Park Drive; this became known later as State Road #15A & served primarily agricultural purposes between Clearwater Beach & Waterloo Rd where there are now several homes still standing evidence that farms were located here prior to WWI .. For many years after WWII most people living in LantANA either worked IF they had some kind of job outside their home or if they simply rented out their land while renting family homes inside & outside of town limits... After Hurricane Andrew hit FLORIDA IN 1992 many people left because they could not afford rebuilds so much money has been invested into very few properties now compareable to what used be there when people lived here
