The rifle stocks history in Lantana, Florida began with the creation of the rifle company by Captain W. H. Overstreet and Major Fenton in 1868. The company manufactured rifles for use by the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. After the war, Captain Overstreet resumed operations of the company and continued to produce firearms until his death in 1887. Lantana is located on the Panhandle of Florida and it is about an hour's drive from Jacksonville. Lantana has a population of about 1,600 people as of 2018. Lantana's history begins with the arrival of J.D. Hogg in 1892 from Missouri to found the town on the panhandle ofFlorida. Hogg had come to the area to prospect for oil and land sales made possible by The Panama Canal Project which was then under construction. After some initial difficulties, Hogg built a school, store and home in Lantana which became one of the most important stops along Highway 50 during that era. The community quickly gained popularity due to its natural resources such as fresh water (a rarity at that time), sandbars on the bayou and good access to truck traffic coming through Jacksonville which helped contribute to its growth over time. Today there are several businesses located in Lantana including: a convenience store/grocery store; two restaurants - both Chain restaurant locations; two banks - First National Bank and Citizens Bank; several churches including Baptist, Methodist, United Methodist and Evangelical Lutheran; numerous homes including those designed by McKim & Mead Architects; as well as many tourist attractions like state parks and beaches along with historical landmarks like Fort Brooke Tower which still stands today! In 1912, they donated land to Tallahassee State College, which became the University of Florida. In 1924, they donated another tract of land to create the Lantana State Park.
