Lantana, Florida is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,823 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, Lantana had a total area of , all of it land. The city is part of the Tallahassee–West Hills–Milton Micropolitan Statistical Area. In 1963, Lantana was selected as one of six towns in the state of Florida to be served by a newpany called American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T). It became an independently owned company with its own management and set about developing high-capacity telephone lines for local businesses and residents. The original high-capacity phone line between Lantana and Tallahassee was built by AT&T in 1965 using traditional submarine cable technology. By 1978, however, AT&T had decided that submarine cables were not suitable for long-distance communication because they were becoming increasingly rare and expensive to maintain. Instead, they used microwave frequencies to build their first high-capacity phone line between Lantana and Tampa Bay; this line also used microwave technology but was much more reliable because it could stay open 24/7 without having to be reset every time a lightning strike hit the wires. In 1984, Qwest Communications merged with AT&T so that both companies developed their own microwave network; this led to the development of several other high capacity phone lines including those between Lantana and Jacksonville Beach (the world's first truly wide open intercity telephone system), Gainesville (the world's first true fiber optic network), Pensacola (the world's first true digital subscriber line service), Clearwater (world's first commercial airport serving only passenger jets) and St Petersburg (world's largest port serving only passenger jets). A post office opened in 1888 and continued serving until 1905; it was moved to neighboring Boynton Beach after that community became larger and more populous than Lantana. A railroad station served Lantana until 1915 when it closed due to lack of traffic. In 1923, an oil refinery and associated businesses were built south of town on what is now US-92 about 4 miles east of present day Lantana proper; however, it burned down in 1954 and never reopened as a business entity. In 1933, the area aroundpresent day downtown was annexed by the city of Tampa; however this annexation did not take effect because then-mayor Jock Mahoney opposed it because he felt that such an annexation would detract from his ability to control development within his own city limits (he remains mayor to this day). In 1935-1936 an outdoor swimming pool called "The Lakes" was built just north of present day Southlake Boulevard between Longwood Avenue and Stonington Avenue; however due to high water levels caused by Hurricane Hattie (1965), the pool ceased operation after only one season due to structural damage sustained during Hurricane Frances (1969). Lantana experienced rapid growth beginning in the early 1990s as new subdivisions were developed throughout much of eastern Polk County while also attracting retirees looking for access to quality public schools close by but without all the hustle and bustle found elsewhere in metropolitan areas experiencing similar growth rates outside their home counties/townships/citieside suburbs. In 1916, local citrus growers established a cooperative to produce oranges and other fruits at what is now known as Dadeland Avenue near today's intersection of US 1/SR 521/US 95 south of town. This cooperative continues to operate as Citrus Heights Farms Inc., one of Miami-Dade County's largest agricultural businesses today. On November 10, 1920, after years of planning by law enforcement officials under Superintendentof Public Instruction Thomas Phelan, Lantana was incorporated as an unincorporated community in Miami-Dade County with 431 residents. On January 15th 1928 another act legalizing organized townships withinMiami-DadeCountywas passed bythe Legislature; thus formingthe MunicipalityofLantiara.(later renamed Zulia). At this time there were only twentyone residents living within the municipality limits when incorporation took place; however by February 1929 there had grown to over two hundred residents due to growth in surrounding cities such as DadelandAvenue and Zulia City Limit
