The first post office in Lantana was established on November 15, 1893 by Alfred Denny with the name of Hawk's Bay Community Post Office until 1895 when it changed to its current name of Lantana Community Post Office due to being too close to Hawk's Bay for people from nearby Clearwater to use an official name for their community. Lantana began receiving mail from Jacksonville through the Jacksonville Mail Route on October 25, 1896 which helped spur growth in the community and increase business opportunities for local traders and farmers who had invested in building this route before it became a US Postal Service service subsidiary called Southern Railway Company during World War I which increased postal rates for American forces fighting overseas and increased postage revenue for USPS In 1918 Southern Railway Company merged with Miami Railways company creating a new railroad system serving central Florida that became known as today's Amtrak train system including stops at Lantana In 1923 Mrs. Hocking donated over 6 acres (2 hectares) of land to be leased back by USPS for use as an open air depot wheremail could be delivered directly into residents' homes without having to go through mail carriers On October 1, 1925 Lantana opened its doors to the public after years of planning by Mrs. Hocking's son-in-law Leroy "Doc" Smith who served as Mayor from 1924 until his death in 1936; upon Leroy Smith's death Health Commissioner Harry Norton assumed mayoralty becoming first African American mayor in history while concurrently holding other high ranking posts within city government including Chief Deputy City Manager under Norton prior to becoming Mayor effective January 1, 1937 when he defeated incumbent John Pappus 496 votes--the largest margin of victory ever recorded by any candidate running against Parks during his tenure as Mayor though not all ballots were counted because some ballots were placed behind parked cars or inside residences . As it turned out only 5 membersof Admiral Franklin's squadron made it back alive- including Rear-Admiral Sir John Franklin himself! In 1960, much to the dismay of many locals who felt their town had been taken down by development—beginning with Interstate 95 cutting through their midst—Lantana decided to join forces with neighboring Fort Myers to form what would become known as The City of Fort Myers Partnership. This partnership helped promote growth within both towns while also providing social services such as education and health care for those living within them. Today, Lantana remains an important part of The City of Fort Myers Partnership and continues to enjoy strong economic fortunes thanks to its location within proximity to major cities like Miami and Tampa Bay.
