Lantana, Florida is a small town in north-central Florida that has been inhabited by the same people for over 200 years. The town was founded in 1836 when traders from Georgia and Mexico explored the area. The town name probably comes from Lantana Creek, which empties into the Miami River about two miles east of the town. The first inhabitants of Lantana were Seminoles who lived near present day Lantana and other nearby towns. In 1837, Baptist missionaries traveled through this region and found the area to be rich in natural resources such as salt water marshes, sugarcane plantations, and cotton fields. This spurred settlers to move into the area and by 1840, Lantana had a population of around 50 people. Lantana experienced some hard times during its early years but it slowly began to develop into a bustling community. In 1865, after Confederate forces invadedFlorida, several families decided to move to Lantana because of its strategic location on high ground overlooking Fort Brooke on the border between Florida and Alabama. After fighting throughout southcentral Florida for four months, Union troops finally withdrew from that part ofFlorida in January 1865. This allowed for development of what is now downtown Lantana while also freeing up land for farming outside of town limits. In 1907, two men named Waddell and Price established an agricultural enterprise called Price Farms near today’s intersection of US 95/US 9W and FM 1724 (now County Road 375). They started out with just a few acres but soon developed into one of northern FL’s largest cotton producers. Lantana was founded by a father and his son in 1907. The Lantana Resort opened in 1931 and became the most popular tourist spot in Florida. In 1942, the Lantana Plantation was bought by Dr. J. B. Wirth and it reopened as a hotel in 1948. It closed again in 1970 but reopened as a casino in 1990.
