Lantana, Florida is a small town in Leon County, Florida. It is located on U.S. Route 90 about 20 miles south of Tampa and 40 miles north of Jacksonville. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. Lantana began as a trading post on the banks of the St Johns River in 1824 by Captain James Cook and his crew during their exploration of South America. In 1839, Lantana was chosen as the site for Fort Brooke which served as a military outpost until it was destroyed by Seminole Indians in 1841. In 1861, Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 7th United States Cavalry Regiment stopped at Lantana while traveling through Leon County on their way to fight against Union General McClellan. The town was destroyed by Confederate forces during the Battle of Lantana on July 5th, 1861. The remaining buildings were rebuilt and are now used as part of the local Historical Museum complex known as "The Old Fort". During World War II, Lantana played host to a number of different airfields including Eglin Field (later Tallahassee AFB), Plantation Air Force Base (now Plantation Municipal Airport), and Clearwater AFB before being transferred to Clearwater Naval Air Station in March 1945 when that facility became an independent Naval Base under Navy jurisdiction. On December 12th, 1990, Hurricane Andrew struck landfall near Lantana killing over 100 people and causing extensive damage across much of eastern Florida including parts of Leon County just east of Lantana proper. That same day saw the first cross-country running race between two teams from distant states - one from Georgia and one from Oklahoma - crossing into Florida near Enterprise along US Highway 90 east of downtown Tallahassee; this event helped kicked off preparations for next year's Daytona 500 stock car racing event which took place six days later at Daytona Beach International Speedway). 2 years later on August 28th 1992 Hurricane Hugo struck Irma killed more than 60 people with some certainly registers up to $100 million damages caused all over southeasternFlorida including parts right around where Lantana sits today...the storm also knocked out power to entire townships within range such as Belleair Springs/Eustis/Kissimmee culminating with over 50% loss or total destruction to many homes leaving little hope for reconstruction or replacement even 3 years after landfall! Lantana, Florida is a small town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lantana was named after a local lantana (Lebanomyces lanatus) shrub that grows along the banks of the Stonington River. The first settler in Lantana was James A. Hargrave who arrived in 1892 and started farming land on what is now Main Street. In 1926, J.C. Allred became the first mayor of Lantana and he served until his death in 1944. Mr Allred's wife Viola served as mayor from 1925 to 1969 and she is also buried at East Cemetery in Lantana. There are three other mayors of Lantana- Harry Wylie from 1938 to 1945; Floyd Boggs from 1966 to 1971; and Vernon Denton from 1984 to 1985- all were re-elected six times with no term limits however they left office due to term limits set by then state legislator Joe Moody which were repealed by incoming Governor Jeb Bush Jr.. Lanticane had its start as a small post office called "Lanticane" on April 15, 1907 which was established by order of US Postmaster General John Dickson with Frank Ewart Harriman serving as the first postmaster general for Leon County In 1930, Lanticane had a population of only five people when it changed its name to "Lantiago" after Manuel Antonio de la Costa y Rivera who donated $1,000 for its construction In 1959 it reverted back to its original name of "Lantiago" In 1970 it again reverted back to its original name of "Lantiago" after being added as an annexe to Kissimmee On October 2nd 1976 it absorbed Santiago which had 4 settlements within its boundaries including: Anastasia (which merged into neighboring Indian Springs), Belle Glade Cove Resort & Spa (later renamed simply Belle Glade), Cloudcroft Beach Resort & Spa ( later renamed simply Cloudcroft), and Seaweed Cove Resort & Spa which merged into nearby Surfside Village on September 30th 1984
