Lantana was founded by two brothers on a cattle Ranch in 1892. In 1907 the brothers sold the ranch to J.C. White and his family who named it Lantana after their home country – Australia. White developed the town into an important agricultural center during the1920s with its production of cotton, sugarcane and other crops. After World War II, Lantana became associated with air travel as it was one of only two communities within 15 minutes’ driving distance from Tampa International Airport on State Road A1A (now Midtown Punta Gorda Boulevard). The community enjoyed some revitalization beginning in the early 1990s when developers purchased land adjacent to downtown for use as housing developments known as The Landing at Jacksonville Landing and First Coast Development Company homes continue to be built there today while also providing office space for various businesses including law firms; banks; restaurants; bars; and retail stores since that time Lantzaman also benefited from state-of-the-art transportation options being available soon after its incorporation which included access to Interstate 4 through downtown Lantzaman along with State Road 519 (now Old US 1) which connected Tampa with Orlando via Bywater Bridge before terminating northeastward at I-4 exit #401 just south of downtown Lantzaman

Lantana grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location at the crossroads of two major railroads, and became a bedroom community for Gainesville and Jacksonville. In 1933, Lantana was incorporated as a city with a population of just over 100 people. By 1960, Lantana had reached its peak as an agricultural center with production of cotton, rice, soybeans, and other crops. However, heavy industry began to arrive in the late 20th century and Lantana declined thereafter; it has since become an agricultural retirement community with few businesses remaining active outside of agriculture.
Lantana was founded in 1892 by Dr. James H. Lantz and his wife, Evalyn Cushing. The Lantz family operated a small grocery store on the property until 1914 when they sold it to J.W. McKay, who renamed it McKay's Lantana and continued to operate it until his death in 1955. In 1957, the business became part of the United States Grapes Corporation, which later merged with Chiquita Brands Incorporated to form Pepsi-Cola Enterprises in 1984.
