Lantana, Florida is a small town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. Lantana is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles east of Pensacola and 15 miles west of Fort Walton Beach. It began as a small fishing village known as "Okeechobee" in 1853. In 1951 it became part of the newly created county of Leon and was renamed for Lantana Creek which flows through it. The first settler in what is now Lantana was Augustus S. Tuttle who came from Boston in 1851 with his family and started a farm on what is now Main Street near present day intersection of US-1/SR-224 and US-27/SR-599A. He named the farm "Okeechobee". The first post office in Lantana was founded on October 3, 1853 by Jno Bicknell with the name "Pensacola". On January 6, 1861, it changed its name to "Lantana" after General John C. Brevard who commanded Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). The first school opened in Lantana on February 10th, 1854 under teacher James Payson Jones under instruction from parents Mrs. Nancy Cowen and Captured Captain John Cowen Jr.. The school closed due to lack of pupils in 1861 when sugar cane production increased around Pensacola so there wasn't much need for schools closer to the island than Okeechobee which was then only 8 miles long by 5 miles wide at its widest point! In 1875 Major George Hargrave Ives built a dam across Okeechobee River just upstream from where present day US 1 crosses it at mile marker 3019N (now SR 59) giving rise to new settlers called "Hargrave's Landing". This community grew rapidly due to Boomtowns construction industry starting up around Tampa Bay during this time period all spurred by demand for cotton grown throughout Alabama and Georgia along railroad lines! On October 5th 1903 citizens voted unanimously to change their name back to Lantana after seeing an ad that read; ' rename your town if you want something beautiful & interesting – call us'. A committee made up of citizens led by MrsERhoda Golding organized an effort to get grants from various sources thru letter writing campaigns until they received $3100 from MrGeorge Wickersham which helped improve infrastructure including streetlights creekside septic systems water tanks etcetera making life much easier for locals including providing jobs for many local craftsmen like bricklayers carpenters painters etcetera . After years delay few wells were drilled until 1926 when drillers discovered oil field off shore about 12 mi southwest of town Limits & soon gas drilling followed spurring numerous businesses such as shrimp cannerys lumberyards farming out chicken coupes ice cream parlors pizza places golf courses etcetera ! Today most prominent business still existing today being( but no longer headquartered here) InterContinental Airlines parent company Delta Airlines
