In the early 1900s, Lantana was a small town in Polk County, Florida. The area now known as Lantana was first settled by Seminoles and their descendants in the late 1800s. In 1907, S.I. Riggs purchased land in what is now Lantana from the Creek tribe and began to develop it into a citrus farm and munitions manufacturing center. Riggs was also one of the original incorporators of the City of Lantana. The first guns that were made here were handguns called “Fenway Park” pistols which were developed at Riggs’ factory on Fenway Avenue in 1911-12. These pistols were used by American forces during World War I and are still considered collectors items today. The following year, 1912, saw the introduction of the .22 caliber rifle called “Lanty Rifle” manufactured by Purdey & Sons Ltd., Ltd., at this same plant. This rifle was introduced as an addition to the regular line up of firearms available for purchase by civilians and military officers alike. In 1915, when World War I ended, Lantana became home to United States Naval Ammunition Plant (USNAP) which manufactures ship ammunition for both US Navy warships and US Coast Guard vessels afloat. At its peak production capacity, USNAP produced over 1 million rounds per day! Unfortunately, due to World War II (1939-1945), much of what had been built at USNAP at Lantana went into use during that time period instead of being destroyed or mothballed like so many other facilities around the country! The site where USNAP currently stands underwent extensive renovation in 2009-2010 under contract with Armament Research Corporation (ARC). ARC designed and fabricated an advanced muzzleloading shotgun system known as “Gun Barrel Projectile System” or GBP for short! This innovative new design allows users to fire projectiles using standard webbing methods without having to remove any barrels from their shotguns! It is hoped that this system will help reduce fatalities associated with shotgun shootings across America!

Today there are several businesses that provide services to residents including a grocery store (Avery's), mechanic shop (Downtown Garage), bank (First National Bank) and doctor (Lambert Hospital). Lantana also features an annual fair which features arts and crafts activities as well as food booths from local restaurants as well as live music performances throughout the day on Saturday mornings from 9-11am sharp!
