Lantana is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 761 at the 2010 census. Lantana is located on Florida's Panhandle on the Gulf of Mexico. The first inhabitants of the area that now comprises Lantana were Creek Indians who lived along the Pensacola River and its tributaries for many years before they were pushed out by traders and settlers in the early 1800s. In 1821, Spanish explorer Manuel de Ayala named it San Marcos after his patron saint, Marcos de Nava. The name stuck until 1881 when it was changed to Lantana because of an aborted railway project called "Lantana Avenue". In 1888, A.J. McCoy built a small log cabin near what is now Lantana Elementary School which served as his home until his death in 1925. His widow continued to live there until her death in 1951. In 1930, McCoy's son-in-law John Waddell purchased the cabin from Mrs. McCoy and made it into a guest house which he used as his farmstead from then until 1954 when he sold it to Ethel Goudreau Bassett who renamed it "Lantern Hill". In 1955, Lantern Hill was acquired by Jernigan & Richardson Construction Company which used it as their construction site for many years before selling it to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lovejoy who kept it as their home until 1978 when they sold it to Mr..and Mrs..Donald Cavanaugh who developed it into what is now known as Lantana Parkland Park (LP). In 1984, LP purchased approximately 3/4 acre of land adjacent to LP's present day property from Jernigan & Richardson Construction Company which had been using that land for storage purposes since they left in 1954. This purchase marked the beginning of what would become one of LP's most significant periods during its history; namely its efforts towards developing its land into a residential community with access to all types of amenities including schools, shopping malls and large parks like Lantern Hill which are still some of LP's top attractions today more than 50 years later! The initial plans for Lantana were drafted by then-Mayor Charles Godfrey Jr., himself – one of only two mayors ever elected statewide twice! After much deliberation and study over several months culminating in a public hearing held on December 10th, 1984 at JP&R's former construction site adjacent to LP’s present day property – Mayor Godfrey submitted proposed ordinances authorizing development on portions or all of LP’s current lands including “Alcazar Drive” being east side OF US Highway 1A just south Of FM 2727 (now known as Morningside Drive) be dedicated exclusively To The City Of Lantonan And becoming open To Residents Who Fulfill All Characteristic Requirements For Development Rights Which Included Espousing A Strong Municipal Ethos And Appreciating Community Services Provided By Local Sheriffs Departments As Well As Parks Department Employees On Their Property! It Was At This Hearing That Intensely debated Plans For A New Library Were Introduced Which Would Be housed inside What Is Currently Known As “Lakewood Village” Which At That Time Was conceptualized As An IntimateNeighborhood redevelopment Project Between LP And Village Of West Palm Beach Which Had Requested Opposition From JP&R Because They claimed That The Tax Values Of Their Lands Would Outweigh Any Benefits accrued From Developing LC&P! Unfortunately Due To Unforeseen Eventswithout any Cause No Action Was Taken But Proposed Ordinances Still Are Valid Today 8 Years Later
