In 1957, Lantana became part of Polk County by splitting off from Duval County following a congressional act that mandated creation of county lines within Florida along racial boundaries due to continued African Americans being incarcerated east of the state line at that time. Today, much of what once made up Dixie had been lost to development but remnants like old churches remain standing testament to early days here when this part ofFlorida was still considered "the black belt."

Lantana was founded in 1903 by E. B. White and his wife, Lillie Mae White. The town was named for the lantana, a type of palm that grows in the area. The Waitners built a small cotton plantation out of what is now Lantana and began to cultivate the palm tree as an agricultural product in 1912. In 1916, they enlisted in the United States Army and were stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, when they discovered oil reserves there. They returned to Florida and set up a drilling rig on their plantation to extract oil from the ground. In 1922, they sold their plantations in Louisiana and returned to Florida with their children to found Lantana as a town named for them.
