Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. In Spanish, it is called "Lago de Oro". The first Europeans to visit Lakeland were the Apalachicola Indians and they hunted deer and other animals there. A small area around what is now downtown was settled by white men in 1851 as part of Seminole Nation land cession after being freed from slavery. By 1884, most of what is now Lakeland had been developed as a resort town with hotels, casinos and vacation homes for wealthy Americans who bought property along the shores of Clearwater Bay. During World War II, Lakeland was home to U.S. Naval Air Station Miramar on Cape Canaveral island which produced B-29s used in strategic bombing operations over Japan until 1945; later those aircraft were stored at Eglin AFB north of Tampa until they were sold to China in 1978 and scrapped there. Dr. Lake was also an early settler in Kissimmee and Sanford counties before he moved to Lakeland in 1821 to establish what would become the largest citrus crop ever grown hereabouts on such a small scale as to make any appreciable impact on local economies until after his death in 1848; thereafter agricultural production increased markedly which led to new housing developments (the so-called "Lakeland Fords") being built around downtown core during much of the 20th century as well as shopping malls (the "Downtown Lakeshore"). Today's downtown cores are characterized by wide array of restaurants and bars/cafes with excellent views of central orlando skyscrapers; large numbers of high-end shops that anchor several blocks along I-4; light industry including two major banks (JPMorgan Chase & Wells Fargo) headquarters from 1952 through 2006 now used for office space but once associated with manufacturing operations across many floors with intricate joinery dating back to 1860s when this area served as an important center for silk dyeingRawson Manufacturing Company). All these characteristics have made Downtown Lakeshore one of Orlando's most vibrant areas – both economically and aesthetically – while still retaining some family feel despite having nearly 2000 residents who work within Downtown cores alone! Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 37,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and home to the University of Central Florida. The area that would become Lakeland was part of Indian River County until 1835, when it became part of Polk County. Lakeland was founded by Seminole Indians in 1839 as a trading post on the Apalachicola River. A cotton gin and mill were built there in 1840 and 1842, respectively; both remain operational today. In 1865, Captain James Fenton established Fort Fenton on the lower Apalachicola River for Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1865-1868). After Union troops captured Fort Fenton in 1868, Lakeland became part of Polk County again. In 1870–71, J W Goode built a gristmill on what is now US 1 south of town. Goode's Mill still stands and operates as a tourist attraction; it has been visited by over 100 million people since it opened its doors to visitors in 1974. In 1901–02 P H Pollard developed land north of town into what would eventually become UCF campus; this helped make Lakeland one of South Florida's most rapidly growing cities during the heady days of World War II (1941-1945). The city's growth slowed after 1945 but resumed somewhat after economic recession hit South Florida in 2008/2009%. Today Lakeland is an affluent community with solid employment opportunities and expanding retail corridors throughout downtown; it remains one of South Florida's fastest-growing neighborhoods outside Miami-Dade County. The University of CentralFlorida traces its roots back to 1907 when Gainesville Normal School opened its doors to teach students from central Floridas counties: Alachua, Baker, Bradford/Polk/Putnam and St Lucie counties were represented among those who attended GNAK “normal” schools until 1926 when Escambia County joined GNAK (Gainesville Normal School closed its doors at Gainesville State College effective February 3rd 1927). In 1928 Enceladus Institute began instruction at GNAK under charter from Tallahassee Normal School which operated outfitted with classrooms, laboratories and other necessary equipment including an engine house used for racing purposes….the original Enceladus Institute building located across US 1 near present day City Hall was destroyed by fire on November 6th 1934 making it visible from every street corner within easy view…..the rebuilt Enceladus Institute building reopened October 4th 1935 adjacent to City Hall……..Enceladus Institute continues instruction today as UCF’s oldest continuing educational institution having first graduated their first class in fall semester 1969….. TodayEscambia Community College offers online courses through Distance Education while also providing face-to-face classes…. On January 16th 1912 Palm Beach Post reported that Pickensville Plantation had leased 50 acres north east of town along Clearwater Bayou for development into a citrus orchard plusatta field…Plantation owner M D Overton died suddenly just prior to construction starting so no heir could be named…Work stopped because owner did not have title deeds or money available to continue work
