Lakeland is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Bayonettown Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lakeland was founded by farmers in 1837 as a small community on the north bank of Lake Wales River. It became a town in 1859 when it was annexed by Orlando. In 1924, it merged with Kissimmee to form the new city of Orlando. The first settler in what would become Lakeland was John Witherspoon and his family who arrived from Ireland in 1837. They built a log cabin on the north bank of the river and named their settlement after their home country: "Lahontan." In 1840, they sold their land to Captain James Cook for $1,000 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha) of salt flats that became present-day Lakeland. Captain Cook named one side of the river "Cook's Harbor" while he called the other side "Witherspoon's Harbor." In 1860, when Kissimmee and Orlando were created separate cities, Witherspoon's Harbor remained an unincorporated community within Kissimmee boundaries until 1886 when it became an incorporated village under its own government with full power to levy taxes and make ordinances subject only to those originating from Kissimmee alone. By 1912 both cities had fully annexed all but two blocks of Larkspur Ave., which remains unincorporated today as part of downtown Orlando proper - making it one block long! There is evidence that settlers near present-day Lakeland had been using water from Larkins Creek since at least 1776 when Daniel Boone recorded finding fresh water thereabouts during his survey for future settlements around Gainesville Colony along creek’s course now known as State Road 441 south into Orange County (then Fort Myers). Fountainhead Battlefield Park east Tennessee Avenue between US 192/SR 441 borderline alignment has been identified where this Fresh Water Supply ceased flowing some time prior to 1776 according aerial photo taken 3/6/2015 Appears creek bed has not changed greatly over time; could be location where old fortifications stopped working
Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's two main employers are Clearwater Marine Services and Dole Food Company. Lakeland was founded by German immigrants on what is now the east side of Lakeland Boulevard in 1892. In 1903, it became a town when it annexed land from neighboring Stonington. As a town, Lakeland had its own post office and school system; however, it merged with Clearwater in 1907 to form one municipality. In 1947, Lakeland gained city status when it amalgamated with nearby Jacksonville. It has since grown rapidly as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and ample water supplies; this growth has led to traffic congestion on Interstate 95 near downtown Jacksonville and on I-95E near Clearwater Beach. Today, Lakeland is known for its wide variety of cultural attractions including art galleries, theaters and music venues; shopping destinations such as Walmart (which anchors the eastern edge of town), JCPenney and Sears; as well as its wide range of lakeside activities such as swimming, fishing and boating.
