In 1916, two groups of men from Polk County organized separate expeditions to climb Mount Rainier and Mt Whitney respectively. These climbs were successful but did not result in any new discoveries about these mountains or their trails. Lakeland, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Ft. Worth metropolitan area. Lakeland was founded in 1851 by Captain James A. Cook as a post on the Stonington River system east of Lake Okeechobee. At its peak in 1871, it had a population of over 20,000 people and served as an important center for agriculture and shipping on the navigable Stonington River. When construction began on Interstate 95 in 1971, most of what remained of Lakeland were razed to make way for new development; however, some buildings and land are still extant today including the Post Office Building (1901), Cook's Store (1851), andthe State Road Administration Building (1927). Lakeland, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,693 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1851 by men who named it after their hometown of Lakeland, Ohio. Lakeland is one of the oldest towns in Polk County. It was first settled around 1800 by families from North Carolina and Virginia. By the 1860s, many people had emigrated to Polk County from eastern Kentucky and Tennessee because of the cotton trade that had been booming during this time. In 1868, a post office was established in the community and it began to grow rapidly as people built homes and businesses. In 1915, a school district was formed out of what were then two separate township organizations in northwestern Polk County. At that time, Lakeland consisted of just over 60 residents and three schools—one for boys and two for girls—provided instruction for grades K-8. By 1930, however, there were 11 residences and five schools within the boundaries of present-day Lakeland Community School District (LCSD). The first school building on Park Avenue in present-day Lakeland was erected in 1915 as part of LCSD's efforts to provide education for all students within its boundaries regardless of family means or financial ability. This structure served as our current high school until it burned down on October 3rd of that year due to an arson attempt by some students at LCSD's administrative offices adjacent to Park Avenue.— Edwin Fenton
