Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded settlement in what is now Lakeland was made by founders of Fort Myers on November 3, 1814. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Boggs Polk who donated land to the community. On October 5, 1836, a post office called "Lakeland" was established by Wm. H. King and Alfred Vail with 10 residents mailing their letters from that point forward to "Fort Myers". A schoolhouse also served as a post office until it burned down in 1886 and all mail pigeons ceased operations in Lakeland on October 1, 1886 due to an order from Postmaster General Amos Kendall; this event has been commemorated by the building of the First Baptist Church which fronts Main Street today. In 1881 whenosa pine lumber became available along Umatilla River Road near present day Fort Walton Beach Boulevard (Umatilla Parkway), entrepreneurs such as JB Long started buying it up and shipping it to Jacksonville for use injadging railroad ties using flatboats on the Intracoastal Waterway then forwarding them across the ocean to build dockside hotels and other commercial properties along Tampa Bayou (now Sanford Blvd). By 1888 there were 25 businesses operating out of five stores/cafés located in downtown Lakeland including two grocery stores/markets and two piano factories employing about 100 men throughout much of central Florida during that period including jobs for many local families who would gather early morning around these establishments before departing for workdays at various warehouses or construction sites throughout downtown St Petersburg/Tampa Bay area where they would later return home after dark once work finished rounding up supplies necessary for their next day's labors primarily involved with manufacturing related tasks at those locations prior to major hurricane Clayton hitting those areas late evening Saturday September 11th resulting in widespread damage caused primarily within eastern parts of Tampa Bay & Peninsula my experience helping our friends at one particular warehouse which had its roof kicked off during Hurricane Clayton Assembly line workers repairing damaged homes newly constructed following this catastrophic event nearly 75 years ago we have never stopped gathering materials needed for tomorrow's endeavors so please don't ask
