Lakeland is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lakeland was founded on November 3, 1896 by George H. Smith and his wife Lucy as a small town called Ashton Landing on the now-defunct Ashton Canal system in north Miami-Dade County. The name was changed to Lakeland in 1907 when land across from present day Northwest Park Boulevard were annexed into the city limits. Lakeland grew rapidly after World War II as a result of its location close to Interstate 95 and its access to several large corporations such as Samsung Electronics and KFC which leased land for development purposes. In 1990, City Manager Harry Capps proposed that the city annex all of Greater Miami Beach east of I-95 because it felt that growth had outpaced development within City Limits. This annexation would have added an additional , or almost two square miles (5 km²), to the city limits making it one of South Florida's fastest growing cities since its incorporation in 1896. The annexation proposal met with stiff opposition from many in City Limits who felt they had been left behind by what they saw as an artificial increase in population without proper consideration for their needs or concerns about future growth potential. Despite this opposition, Mayor Harold Washington signed off on the annexation plan on May 24, 1990 - becoming only the third mayor of Miami-Dade County to do so since 1870 when county government first evolved under Spanish rule. After years of planning and controversy, construction began on what would become known as "The Master Plan" for downtown Lakeland consisting of over 25 acres (10 hectares) of new land including three commercial buildings: One First satellite office building; One Sam's Club warehouse; And A new library/conference center/ concert hall complex which seated up to 2,500 people inside and outside during events). In 1821, when Tampa became a separate entity from St Petersburg County, Lakeland was added to Tampa proper as part of that county's boundary adjustment. The name "Lakeland" first appeared on a map in 1845 and its present spelling stems from an act passed by the state legislature on February 12, 1865 which changed the official name of Polk County from Anejo to Lakeland after General James K. Polk had been elected president that year and traveled through the area during hiscampaign for office. The town of Sanford developed around Fort Brooke military installation near what is now downtown Lakeland. Alligators were hunted for their meat until 1920 when an alligator hunting moratorium was put into place due to fears that these creatures might become extinct as a result of hunting pressure from humans and other events such as computer-generated images used in advertising campaigns A major employer during the late 19th century was Jardine Rubber Company which made rubber products including tires and shoes In 1925, construction began on Veterans Memorial Hospital which still stands today In 1955-1956 Interstate 10was built concurrent with US 41W making access to Sanford much easier On December 3rd 1959 President Eisenhower declared Christmas Eve National Holiday
