Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 912 at the 2010 census. It was founded on November 16, 1881 by Simeon Bogue and James L. This name may have been based on Saint Michaels Island which lies about midway between St Petersburg and Tampa Bay (about 30 miles west of Lakeland). Lakeland was founded in 1835 by Capt. John T. Polk, who named it for General James K. Polk, the President of the United States at the time. The area now known as Lakeland was first inhabited by Native Americans and was a part of the Miami-Illinois Confederacy before its cession to America in 1778. In 1832, Polk donated land to create what is now Seminole County and in 1836, he donated another tract of land to create Luce County. In 1840, Lakeland incorporated as a town under the name of Clearwater with a population of only 25 people. The town quickly grew and by 1845 had a population of 1,500 people. By 1865, Clearwater had become an actuated center with timber and cotton production being its mainstay economy. As Clearwater became more developed, it began to attract waves of European immigrants who were drawn to its resources and social opportunities. By 1870, Clearwater had reached a population of 3,000 people and by 1890 it had reached 5,000 people
