Lakeland, Florida is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Combined Statistical Area. Lakeland was founded by pioneers in 1836 as a farming community called "Emmetsville." In 1868 it became the county seat of Polk County and has remained that way since. The name Lakeland comes from two sources: one originates from Spanish "Laguna," meaning "lake" and another source comes from English "Hallandale," which means "halt for horsemen" on Hernando de Soto's trip through central Florida in 1539. A post office called Emmetsville was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The history of Lakeland can be traced back to its early days as a farming community known as Emmetsville. Pioneers discovered salt mines there early on and began to extract it for their own use and sale to other settlers near Gainesville. By 1868, when Polk County was created, Emmetsville had become an important commercial center with its own courthouse and jail/prison complex. The town also grew rapidly because of new transportation methods developed during the Civil War: steamboats brought goods upriver to town while railway cars transported goods downriver to Gainesville; this system continued into the 20th century. The growth of Lakeland did not stop after the war however; instead it accelerated due to improvements in transportation technology that allowed for more efficient land travel between Tampa and Jacksonville; this increased trade made Lakeland an even more important economic center by 1920. In addition to its importance as a commercial center, Lakeland also saw some minor construction projects undertaken during this time such as the building of a Methodist Church (1895) or additions to several public schools (1910-1920). Lakeland, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Combined Statistical Area. The first settlements in what is now Lakeland were made by Seminole Indians who had been evacuated from their original land after the American Indian War of 1812. A post office called "Nacoochee" was established in 1827, and was moved to its present location in 1868. In 1892, the City Council added a part of West Palm Beach as a charter city and named it Lakeland. The name change was due to objections from West Palm Beach which wanted to keep its own name and had started calling itself "Lake Worth". The city began growing rapidly after it opened its first flood control channel in 1935, which allowed for more water access for agriculture and development around town. By 1940, Lakeland had reached its current size with over 60 businesses and 1,000 residents. In 1951, an airport was built just east of town on Airport Road (now Hillsboro Boulevard). At that time it served only local passengers; today it serves both passenger transportation and air cargo operations serving both Orlando International Airport and Daytona Beach International Airport . In 1955–1956, Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage to downtown Lakeland including most of theCENTURY CITY Mall which still stands today as a recreation area complete with amusement park attractions such as Six Flags Over Georgia . In 1990–1991 when Volusia County merged into Duval County all governmental offices were relocated from Plantation on State Road 257 south of town to Parkcenter Plaza in west westlake village . During this time lakeland lost some much loved businesses such as Sears until they reopened under new ownership less than two years later

In 1821, after American forces ousted Spanish from Cuba, General David Darling named a tract of land that includes today's Lakeland after General James K. Polk, who served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War. The town of Fort Walton Beach (now Lee County) was founded on the site of present-day Fort Walton Beach on September 12, 1867 by Captains John A. Wise and George Hartsfield. On December 1, 1869, the town became a county under the laws of Florida On January 15th 1870 Judge Gentry appointed Jno Wicker to be United States Marshal for Lee County In 1890 Mrs. Jane Addams donated her farmstead at present day Crandon Park to create a public park there which still exists today
