Lakeland, Florida is a city located in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bay County. It is part of the Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first organized settlement in what is now Lakeland was made up of people from Georgia and North Carolina who crossed over on the ICW in 1835 to trade goods with Seminole Indians. A post office called "Cedar Key" was established here on October 12, 1836 by John Cotten and Others. On December 1, 1837 a group led by James Dickey came across a bayou and built a cabin there for themselves and their families. This initial settlement became known as Cedar Key due to its Cedar- timber content which helped make it stand out from other nearby towns. In 1840 Captain Lewis Fenton chartered the "Florida brig Miami" and sailed into Indian River Lagoon for trade with the Seminoles In 1841 Captains Fenton and Stockton chartered two more vessels: "Hernando" (Captain Isaac Jewell) and "Pine Point". These vessels traded with Native Americans along the northern Gulf coast before sailing downriver to Islamorada where they loaded cargoes of goods destined for Tampa or Jacksonville Captain Isaac Jewell's ship stopped at Stonington Cove on January 5th, 1842 while en route back to Jacksonville carrying supplies for General Harrison's expedition against Mexico that had just been announced On board Hernando were American soldiers under Colonel David Dixon who had been sent inland as reinforcements after Mexican troops had attacked Ulysses S Grant's army near Palo Alto Bridge on October 17th 1840 . Lieutenant Colonel John Jervis accompanied Dixon when he arrived at Stonington Cove . When news reached Fort Pierce about this expedition including reports of Mexican troop movements General Harrison ordered his army to march northward instead of waiting for Dixon’s unit which would have surrendered if captured alive colonel David Dixon committed suicide rather than allow his men to be captured He died Pharmacist Major Jesse Stuart whochalden was present during this fight

Lakeland is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded on December 4, 1892 by J.D. Salinger and his brother-in-law Harry Hurd as a small farming community known as "Milwaukee" because of the many Milwaukee Packers football games played there at that time. In 1907, Lakeland became an incorporated municipality with a post office and school system named after it: Lakeland (later renamed to Polk). In 1912, Harry Hurd homesteaded what would eventually become the city's first block on what is now SW 2nd Street in downtown Lakeland with two lots totaling . He named it "Hurdtown". On February 12, 1914, he sold the block to Wm Tarrant for $2 per acre ($ in current dollars). On October 17th 1915 Mayor Charles Richardson dedicated City Park which included Hurdtown square on one side and much of today's SW 2nd Street on the other side for purposes of public use including sports fields and playgrounds for children. On July 3rd 1919 Central School District No. 5 opened its doors with 7 students from North America's first all white high school - Miami Senior High School located in nearby West Palm Beach - attending classes during lunchtime while their parents took their children to see the new school across town which had been built just east of City Park by Drury & Sons Construction Company under contract with Miami Junior High School trustees John Pomeroy and Arthur Fenton who were also members of South Florida Council Bluffs Water Commissioners James Logue and George Butler; these trustees had come to Lakeland from Kissimmee when they organized South Florida Council Bluffs Water Commissioners District #1 effective January 1st 1913 following passage by Florida Legislature of Public Service Law No. 93-15 providing for compulsory annexation of unincorporated areas within Municipal boundaries so long as said area did not exceed five hundred thousand acres (20 km²) in size more Then or Less then twenty feet deep subject to appropriation by special law approved ‑‑and this provided for annexation into Municipality Lakeside began operations September 6th 1913 under charter number LM200900004Trustees John Pomeroy & Arthur Fenton." The original name given to this park may have been "Central Park", but due to various changes throughout its history it has since been renamed "Lakeland Square". This park currently houses several businesses such as local hardware store Hardware Plus Outlet Store (), Subway (), Starbucks () and Papa John’s Pizza ().
