In Lakeland, Florida there have been many gun target history events that have occurred over the years. One such event took place on October 3, 1898 when a group of 70 riflemen from the 9th Cavalry Regiment fired on a bullseye target at the old Cape Girardeau Arsenal. This event is significant in that it was one of the first times rifles were used in actual combat during the Spanish-American War. The 9th Cavalry Regiment was also responsible for shooting down an American airplane over Tampa Bay on February 2, 1905. Another important gun target history event took place on November 15, 1959 when 350 rounds were fired at a 5-foot by 10-foot bullseye target at Fort Myers Municipal Airport. This event is significant because it was one of only two times guns were used in air warfare during the Korean War and it is also notable for being the first time live ammunition was used at a gunnery range in Florida. On July 7, 1969, 1,000 rounds were fired into a 20-foot diameter bullseye target at Everglades National Park’s Gunnery Range. This event is significant because it marked the beginning of Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to clean up several areas of Panthera Island which had become contaminated with lead and other toxins as a result of mining operations conducted by Cuban authorities during Fidel Castro’s rule in Cuba. This marks the first time live ammunition was used extensively for gunnery training purposes in Florida and it also served as an qualification ground for new Navy officers who had just arrived in Lakeland from their Naval academies or from Reserve Units stationed elsewhere across Central Florida

Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. The area that became Lakeland was part of the Seminole Nation before being annexed by the United States in 1836. It was named for General James K. Polk and his wife Elizabeth Finney Polk. The community had its first plat on November 3, 1895, when brothers Gus and Harry Hargrave laid out a town lot on what is now State Road 421 east of US-41 near Lakeshore Drive. They called their settlement "Hargraveville". On December 2, 1897, the name change to "Lakeland" after General James K. Polk's visit to Pensacola Bay during his tour of Florida as President Grover Cleveland's special envoy to promote agricultural development in that state. Lakeland grew rapidly due to lumbering and railroad interests which built mills and other businesses throughout the early 1900s; however World War I halted growth until after 1919 when a new mill opened at present day Uniontown Boulevard and US-441 east of town within one mile (1 km) of where Lakeland currently stands. In 1927, two years after hatchery construction began on Whitefish Lake dam across from town began operations by Jepson Lumber Company officials seeking improved water quality for their sawmills in nearby Clearwater Harbor Dam – an event still celebrated annually as Hatchery Day – Congress passed Public Law No. 282 authorizing federal loans to help finance the construction of Whitespine Dam across Clearwater River upstream from town limits; this action signaled an end to lakefront logging once dams were built downstream including those at Clearwater Harbor along with many others over ensuing decades culminating in final destruction of white pine forests approximately 80% eliminated by 1980 making way for Everglades National Park habitat.. The arrival of television changed all that with people wanting access to vast swaths of undeveloped land northcentral Florida since home movies could be seen without having leave home or go through difficult long drives into central or southern states like Alabama or Mississippi….. By 1986 there were over 1 million people living within city limits….. Today much remains unchanged such as original downtown square containing City Hall Annex building & several small business blocks…. Other parts have experienced significant redevelopment including: Old Town Square which contains Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store & numerous small shops; NW corner just south off SR421 leading down towards Fishponds shopping center; SW corner near old post office annex opposite Walmart plaza…. It’s these everyday moments that make up history as well as some more memorable ones such as when then Mayor Gayle King addressed a meetingof LakeLAND Citizens Association on September 27th 1978 following completion of wideningSR421 Widening project concurrent with opening night celebration at Hollywood Casino……Now known simply as “Mayor King” roundabout leads back onto SR 421 just past HWY 99 intersection
