Lakeland, Florida is a city in the Miami-Dade County, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north coast of both Lake Wales and Miami Beach. Lakeland was founded in 1892 as a logging town on the now submerged Kissimmee River by J.C. Penney and his brother-in-law James McKnight. When Penney died in 1899, control of the town passed to McKnight's son John Hite who renamed it Lakeland after himself and his home state of Ohio. In 1903, Hite sold the town to J.P. Morgan for $1 million dollars cash plus future royalties from lumber sales there. Morgan renamed it Fort Lauderdale after himself and completed construction of two hotels which he named "The Palm" (1905) and "The Port Royal" (1907). In 1915, Fort Lauderdale became an incorporated municipality with a population of 382 when it annexed land east of downtown that had been part of Polk City since 1868 but within its jurisdiction only because Polk City lacked a governing body able to make decisions affecting annexation or incorporation vote results without unanimous approval from all its residents which was then determined by commissioners appointed by Mayor Posey.* After years of negotiations, annexation resulted in full cityhood for Fort Lauderdale on November 4, 1926 with a population of 594; later that year saw completion of I-95 between Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach making it one major arterial road in South Florida On January 15th 1940 during World War II Fort Lauderdale became an airbase providing support for both Allied fighter bombers passing through southern FL at high altitudes over Boca Raton Bay while American fighter planes flew missions over German aircraft carriers off Tampa Bay* On July 22nd 1944 United States forces bombed Hiroshima(now Nagasaki) killing more than 150 people including many children playing near Mt Fuji(* infant daughter Miyako*) In 1948 FtLauderdale merged with neighboring Dania Beach becoming an incorporated municipality with 2/3rds white & 1/3rd black residents followed by Broward County effective February 14th 1959 After years Of rapid growth due largely To oil exploration activity adjacent to Downtown &&&&&&&&&&& government services were extended rapidly & efficiently into suburbs outside downtown ||||||||||||||||

Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Lakeland was originally inhabited by the Timucua people. They were moved to what is now Polk County by the Spanish during the early 17th century. The town of Zephyrhills was founded in 1824 by Captain John Stroud and his family after they returned from a survey of Florida Bay and established a trading post on Pensacola Creek. Two years later,Captain John Stroud donated land for a new town, which would become Lakeland. In 1828, Captain John Stroud's widow married Aiden Pearcey, who had come from Jacksonville with their children to purchase property in what is now Polk County. Pearcey began construction on his home called "The Oaks", which still stands today within the boundaries of present-day Lakeland. In 1831, Captain John Stroud's son-in-law Revd Canon Bowen bought some land northeast of present day Lakeland and developed it into what is now downtown Bowenville for himself and his wife Pollyanna Bogue Pearny (1804-76). They named their new home "Bogue Park". Reverend Canon Bowen also built a Methodist church and school in central Lakeland in 1832. It was here that James Kenedy first met General Andrew Jackson when he stopped at Bowenville for supplies while traveling through Central Florida in 1830; Kenedy became Jackson'ssupplier at this time.In 1835, Judge James Swayne purchased 5 acres (20 dunams) north of downtown from Reverend Canon Bowen for $850 cash plus 10% interest per year until death or sale; this parcel became known as Swayne Square today. In 1840s an Act of Congress designated Flagler Sound as Seminole Indian Territory due to concerns over messages being relayed between South Florida traders and Native Americans along that coast; under this law no white person could own land within Seminole Indian Territory save through special permission from Chief Osceola or one of his successors.. On November 15th 1840 Captains Jno Henson & Wm Fenton sailed into Flagler Sound on USS Constitution under instructions from US President James Ketchum to survey mineral resources therefor but without success found nothing valuable enough to warrant further exploration so return voyage not repeated another year only problem was lack $$ to continue Marine Survey so finally decided go back out & explore N/W FL mainland using HMS Beagle instead Joseph Handley served as First Officer & Geologist aboard USS Constitution during Geology Mission led by Captains Henson & Fenton including: Collection Of Mineral Data By Mr Jno Henson Patent Bill For Discharge Of Thisvessel As Surveyor Governing And Supervising interests In These Islands Was Issued…On December 3rd 1840 USS Constitution Boarded At Sitka Alaska By Commodore George Dewey After His Expedition Against The Alaskan Tusk People He Insisted Upon All Men Onboard To Carry Out His Orders No exception made To Those Who Were Present When Boarding Which Included Captains Jno Henson & Wm Fenton Also Joshua Safia Commanding HMS Beagle Lt Col Charles E King USMCR Lakeland experienced rapid growth beginning with its incorporation as a city on January 1st 1902 following passage of City Charter Amendment No 2 passed by referendum voters.[1] Growth continued through annexations throughout 1903 with more than 60 communities joining River Hills annexed on December 5th 1903,[2] ten days after River Hills' annexation.[3] By 1907 there were 246 residents living in lakefront areas extending beyond its original borders:[4] Today those borders remain largely unchanged with just 8 properties located inside city limits while all other properties are outside city limits but accessible via public transportation such as MARTA or I-Drive
