Lakeland, Florida is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Cottonwood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lakeland is located on the western shore of Lake George and across from Tallahassee. The area that now comprises Lakeland was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1821, when Seminole Indian Chief Osceola led a war against Spanish settlers in what is now Escambia County, he set up camp on what are now known as Old Plantation Road northeast of present-day downtown Lakeland. A group of Englishmen claimed this land in 1824 during the Seminole Wars and named it after General James Kenedy's Creek Station near modern day Tallahassee; they also established Fort George Wright on this site. In 1827–28, Governor John Cranch approved plans for a new county seat to be established east of Tampa and north of Mobile Bay; this location would become home to Gainesville and eventually Jacksonville. However, due to protests from local citizens who wanted their city center within their own boundaries (the original township had been divided into two areas: Gainesville proper and southwest corner of town now known as Pinellas Park), President Andrew Jackson vetoed the plan and replaced Gainesville with Lakeland as its new county seat on February 12, 1830 – less than one month after his inauguration as president. The first store opened in what is now downtown Lakeland in 1830; it was called "Moses Davenport & Co." The town rapidly grew until it reached its current size by 1840 when Stonington (then part of Tallahassee) became its eastern neighbor. By 1850, nearly all residents within walking distance had moved into what is today downtown Lakeland or outlying villages such as Nacoochee Landing or Thaddeus Stevens Village; during that time period only five white men lived permanently outside the limits of town – four farmers and one doctor who operated an early hospital thereabouts . In 1945, after World War II ended, Lakeland became a center for displaced persons from Japan and other parts of Asia. It also served as a refugee resettlement area until 1971. In that year, Lakeland became an official U.S. city. Lakeland's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding; however, it has experienced some growth in recent years with the development of new businesses and industries such as information technology and real estate. The city is home to several universities, including Florida State University and USF Beach Bowl Stadium; as well as several amusement park attractions such as Six Flags Overdrive and Universal Orlando Resort
