The annexation was made possible because both towns were being used as military bases by the United States during World War II and they could not be returned to their original municipalities without violating wartime residency restrictions. On July 6, 1961 Lakeland-Davenport-Winter Haven combined to form its fourth largest municipality with a total population of 72,449 residents as reported by the US Census Bureau that year - this merger would remain unchanged until 2003 when it again changed hands due to federal funding cuts which impacted many small cities in Florida during that period

Lakeland, Florida was founded on a small island in the now-defunct Pensacola Bay. On December 12, 1821, a group of Englishmen led by Captain John Smith sailed from England to find an exemption from paying sales tax to the Spanish crown. They named their new settlement after Lakeland in Lancashire, England. The first American settlers arrived in 1827 and renamed the town Lakeland for themselves. By 1830, the population of the town had grown to 350 people and it was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1830. The city quickly became known for its rich phosphate resources and its many industries including shipbuilding, brewing beer and cotton ginning. In 1868, Lakeland was annexed by Jacksonville but remained part of Jacksonville's city government until 1898 when it became its own separate municipality under new local government laws. After World War II, much of what is now downtown Jacksonville was developed as part of what is now called "Lakeland Business Park." This limited development occurred because most businesses located outside of downtown were unable or unwilling to move to a location that would have been considered too close to Interstate 95 and other major highways. However, since 2000 things are changing again with more development happening in downtownJacksonville than ever before thanks to the efforts of Mayor Lenny Curry and his team at City Hall. This growth has brought about several new businesses such as The Peninsula Hotel which opened in 2010 just steps away from I-95; Hard Rock Cafe which moved into their current location in 2013; TD Ameritrade Arena which opened in 2016; and JCPenney Park whichopenedin 2018 just down the street from City Hall! Downtown Jacksonville is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourists and locals alike due to its convenient location right next to multiple shopping districts as well as easy access to all that Jacksonville hasto offer!
Lakeland, Florida was founded in 1837 by James A. Wright. The town was named for the Lakeland River which flows through it. The first post office in the town was established in 1838. The first railroad to reach Lakeland was the Santa Fe Railway in 1865. In 1902, the towns of Wacoal and Plant City were merged into Lakeland. In 1912, a new courthouse and jail were built in the town center. In 1940, a new fire station and school were erected in the town square. In 1959, a hospital and daycare were constructed east of the downtown area of Lakeland. In 1972, an airport was opened near town proper.
