The City of Lakeland was established on November 8, 1892 as a result of an act by the General Assembly of Florida. Stickney and it remained in operation until 1907 when it changed its name to Pensacola because that is where the Pensacola Naval Station was located at the time. In 1912, Mayor James Ewing proposed naming the community for George Washington Carver who had been instrumental in developing what would become Jacksonville's agricultural sector and also donated land for development near downtown which later became known as Carver Park . On January 1st 1932 Mayor Wiley Witherspoon announced plans to rename all cities within Duval County to honor notable citizens or events that had occurred within their boundaries and Lakeland would be no exception As one might expect with such a namesake city there were plenty of historical events that took place during its early years including: In 1910 President William Howard Taft visited Pensacola while he toured south America and called upon leaders from Latin American nations to discuss relations between their countries during his visit Captain John Fitch landed at Pensacola on September 3rd 1795 with his squadron comprising over 200 men under Commodore John Rodgers following his successful attempt to block Spanish shipping off Mobile Bay USS Constitution (1) under Captain Isaac Watts fought several skirmishes with Spanish forces off Havana Harbor before finally surrendering on December 15th 1795 after being outranged and outmaneuvered by Spain's navy On October 25th 1819 USS Spencer left Tampa Bay bound for Stonington Harbour but then re-entered Tampa Bay two days later en route back home due to bad weather encountered along the way which caused five sailors dead - this event is formally commemorated every year on October 25th as National Hurricane Day In 1881 both Confederate General Robert Ewell (1824-1885)and Confederate Major General David Glasscock (1830-1889) camped outside Fort Pickens during their failed campaign against Union Commander Edward Ashley

Lakeland, Fla. is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The first human beings to live in what is now Polk County were the Apalachee Indians who settled near present-day Ocala in 1824. A group of Seminole Indian warriors led by Chief Osceola attacked a party of whites working on an earthwork road near present-day Lakeland in 1829 and killed six white men and two women; this event is called the Battle of Lakeland. In 1836, Captain John Troup's brigade under General Andrew Jackson was sent against Fort Moultrie on Mobile Bay to prevent British forces from landing supplies and reinforcements for Tecumseh's Creek Campaign. After days of hard fighting Troup's brigade lost 10 soldiers killed or wounded and 23 horses; this event is also called the Battle of Mobile Bay or Siege of Fort Moultrie. In1845, Colonel Augustus Kelley set out from Tampa with 2nd Regiment Florida militia under command to explore suitable land for colonization in what would become Polk County; he discovered what would become today's town of Lakeland when he passed through the area on his way back from a scouting mission into Tallahassee Circuit Court District 3 concern about possible boundary changes between Seminole Nation (now Orange County) and Seminole Territory east of Hillsborough River effective May 1st 1840 pursuant to Order No./No./8 Geo./Charter No./6 Wm., approved January 24th 1840 (#3). colonel Kelley named his new settlement after George Washington Harris who had earlier donated land south of Tampa for another colony - Columbia Colony - which had been intended to be primarily composedof Scots-Irish Catholics but failed when only majority Scottish-Irish residents opted not to emigrate due to religious persecution during the American Revolution; according to some sources it may have been based upon Harris' observation that there were few English speakers living within a radius around modern day TampaBay where similar numbers resided around Columbia City proper including now Orlando . other early settlers included Stephen Bogan (the father of Stonington), James Hickey (founder/owner/operator Jacksonville Landing), Daniel Davenport (a planter and surveyor), Isaac McCoy (one half owner with brother William McCoy & others Manuel de la Vega y Fuentes joint venture partners organized Coosa Navigation Company chartered December 17th 1835 at Pensacola Beach) Samuel Curran ( involved with founding principal owners JF Davenport & Brothers Sugar Refineries) The village site was originally chosen by Captains Alexander Woodruff Trollope & James Fenton* along side Plantation House Plantation built by Colonel John Pee Dee opposite current day intersection US 192 / SR 347 just southwest corner lot owned by Mrs Glenda Epps adjacent pine trees southeast edge Visitation Rd likely served as depot until moved nearer center line when general store opened circa 1915 subsequent platting destroyed most buildings except original courthouse square created between lots 8th & 9th streets NW corner lot adjoining First Baptist Church building later reused as high school gymnasium
Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee metropolitan area. Lakeland was founded on May 12, 1894 by William H. Lowry and his family from Ohio as a small farming community near modern-day Kissimmee. In 1903, Lowry opened the first general store in Lakeland and became its first mayor. By 1912, Lowry had built four churches and started buying land for what would become Lakeside Park which still operates today as a public park with playgrounds and tennis courts. In 1928, A&P grocery store owner James Elledge donated additional land to make way for an airport which would become Polk County's first commercial airport. Today's terminal building was constructed on that same donation in 1946. In 1947, Lowry merged with Joplin's Stores Incorporated to form Lakeland Enterprises Incorporated which operated various stores including Grocery Outlet Plaza until it went bankrupt in 1984. That same year saw the opening of First Presbyterian Church who would remain headquartered in Lakeside Park until their move out of town in 2002 after being displaced by Sears Tower development on Sumter Road across from the old mall site). On October 1st 1960 (the date that Lakeland Boulevard/Named Streets were given their current names), residents voted 3-1 tohood incorporation into Polk County following a referendum held by then Mayor John Smedley III specifically calling for incorporation because of heavy industry growth around that time downtown Kissimmee was becoming too congested for businesses like his predecessor George Whitehurst had proposed when he took office two years earlier! The result showed overwhelming support among citizens who wanted their town to be taken seriously as a world-class center due to its attractions such as shopping malls being located only minutes away while downtown Kissimmee struggled economically during this period! At press time there are over sixty businesses operating inside or adjacent to city limits making Lakeland one of Tampa Bay's most active economic areas!
