Lakeland, Florida is a city located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 126 at the 2010 census. It was founded by entrepreneurs J.B. Hunt and Mina Hunt in 1882 as a cattle station on the lower end of Lake Okeechobee. The Hunt family continues to own and operate the town today as part of its tourist attractions. The first permanent residents were two families from Georgia who went to live near Pensacola in 1885 when that location became available for settlement after a fortuitous storm destroyed Fort Walton Beach on July 10th, 1884. They named their new community "Lakeland" in honor of their home state's capital city, Atlanta (then known as Savannah). In 1886, A & H Railroad built a line east out of Jacksonville to Lakeland which connected with Mobile Bay Bridge connecting Mobile and Pensacola then onwards to St Augustine through Tallahassee before terminating at Clearwater Bayou outside Tampa. This made it possible for people working in the area related to agriculture or fishing to commute back and forth to various parts of Tampa or Jacksonville each day while also providing transportation for goods arriving from inland salt mines or exports going down the Gulf Coast shipping route

Lakeland was founded by the brothers who named it after their father, James Lake. The area that is now known as Lakeland was first inhabited by the Timucua people. In 1820, a group of American colonists called the Seminole settled in this region and began trading with the Timucua. In 1827, Captain John Smith discovered and mapped Florida and named it for James King, Duke of York. In 1830, Lieutenant Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna granted title to land in what is now Polk County to Juana Sanchez Parras y Ponce de Leon. This grant made Lakeland part of Spanish Florida. In 1835, President Andrew Jackson appointed General Jesús Vásquez as governor of Spanish Florida and ordered him to investigate ownership issues in the region. Vásquez found that many prominent Floridians had been purchasing land in what is now Polk County without proper documentation or consent from their Mexican owners. He ordered these individuals to sell their holdings back to Spain or face punishment under Jackson's administration. As a result, many of these landowners decided to move away from Pensacola and instead established themselves at nearby Fort Myers onの古墓地方 (Ft Myers). After eight years of investigation, Vásquez returned his report recommending that Spain cede control over all Lightning Key Peninsula including Fort Myers to America for $3 million cash In 1841–42, during Mexico's War for Independence against Spain, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led an army into Spanish Florida while Governor José María Cortés fought off smaller rebel forces at Tampa Bay Santa Anna arrived at Tampa Bay on November 9th 1840 but did not enter into Tampa because he believed that only a Spaniard could rule America — an idea which would be tested later whenFlorida became independent from Spain On January 3rd 1843 Pedro Menéndez reached Tampa Bay after crossing the Isthmus of Tehuantepec on his way from Vera Cruz
