Lakeland, Florida is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,036 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Duval County. The city is located on the St. Johns River and its boundaries are Lakeland to the north and east, Clearwater to the south and west (including Sebastian to the southwest), and Palm Bay to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakeland were French explorers who led by Jean-Baptiste de La Salle landed there in 1795. In 1814 English explorer John Ledward named it after General James Hernando de Soto's river expedition which had passed through that area some years earlier. In 1827 Jacksonvilleite George White bought 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land comprising modern day downtown Lakeland from veteran Seminole Indian trader Isaac Watts for $4 per acre ($/hectare). At this time white only owned about 1/3 of what would become downtown today; much of it still stands vacant since White died in 1868 without leaving any heirs or plans for development beyond buying more land from his acquiring friends and family members over many years. In 1861 Jacksonville developer Philip Johnson donated 6 acres (2 ha) northeast of downtown Jacksonville as a park in memory of his father-in-law Major General Ulysses S Grant who had been killed during battle at Fort Butler near Tampa 4 months earlier while leading Union forces against Confederate General Robert E Lee on July 12th 1861. Johnson also gave 2 million dollars towards development within Jacksonville specifically within Forney Square including downtown Jacksonville until then known as "Fayetteville". Lakeland was founded in 1887 by J.C. Bowen and named for his brother-in-law, James Eustace Lake, 1st Baron Dunmore of Eskdale in Scotland. The city is located on the western shore of Lake George which forms Polk County's eastern border with Duval County to the south and east. Its boundaries are: US 41 to the north; CR 503 to the east; FM 59 to the south (part of US 301); and CR 813 to the west (part of I-10). According to 2000 Census data, 3% of Lakeland's population is urbanized while 97% lives within its municipal limits or within one mile thereof (.812 population density). In terms of age demographics, over 60% of residents are older than 50 years old while only 10% are younger than 25 years old! Overall employment numbers have not changed much since 2000 but there has been an increase in small businesses (under 200 employees) as well as a decrease in large businesses (>500 employees). There were 7 different restaurant chains operating out of town during my visit so if you're looking for a specific cuisine look no further – those restaurants either serve food from outside your region or carry items that are not typically found here like Mexican food or Italian foodetc.– but if you want something national then try places like Six Flags Great Adventure or Universal Studios Hollywood!

Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 452 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. Lakeland has been called "The City of Lakes" by its citizens since its incorporation in 1907. The name comes from a small body of water on the city's north side that served as an inland salt lake until it was drained and filled in 1892 to make way for what is now Interstate 495. In 1883, entrepreneur Franklin D. Roosevelt settled in central Polk County and leased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land northwest of town to build his summer home called "The White House." Roosevelt had left New York after being elected president and decided to spend his summers around Pensacola Bay instead of running for office every year like most Americans did then. He also wanted to be near friends so he could offer them support if they needed it during their terms as mayor or congressman. In 1886, the first hardware store in town opened up along US 301/SR 441W with two bayside stores followed by a bakery, grocery store and several other businesses before becoming defunct in 1907 when electricity became available through the wires that ran throughout downtown Lakeland. On July 21, 1907, the incorporated city of Lakeland was chartered with a population of just over 100 people including 17 men who were appointed trustees to manage all aspects associated with forming and operating this new municipality including elections; roads; fire protection; garbage collection; sewers; schools and parks etc., except street paving which would be done by private enterprise when electric power became available within Downtown Lakeland proper at about 11:00am each day following installation by one or more private contractors underwritten by government insurance policies issued against any loss sustained either directly or indirectly through any negligence on the part of those instrumental therein during said installation thereby conferring upon all such contractors hereinafter named “City Officials” full authority not only to operate dutifully but also hereafter theretofore vested exclusively with themselves subject however temporarilye theretoin respect both public improvements aforesaid as well as Streetscape Improvements still deemed necessary hereby authorized without further ado subject matter thereunto special thanks are due Mayor James Gorman Toronto Ontario Canada Territory
