Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Lakeland was founded in 1885 by J.M. Stewart and Wm. Aiken as a small community on the edge of an ancient trade route between Tampa and Jacksonville. In 1905, Lakeland began to grow with the arrival of railroad developers who named it after their hometowns – Cleveland, Ontario (now Toronto), Canada; Boston, Massachusetts (now Framingham); and Jacksonville, Florida (now Jacksonville Beach). In 1925,the city became a county municipality with its own sheriff and court system In 1960, Lakeland annexed Plant City and formed a new municipal corporation which included parts of Sanford and Winter Garden. The annexation increased the city's population from 710 to 1,021 residents over the next six years as growth continued within what had been known as "The Antilles". That same year saw construction begin on what would become one of Polk County's most iconic landmarks: RiverWalk Boulevard - later renamed State Road 441 - which ran through downtown from west to east bisecting Lakeland's urban core "It is said that when Gov. George Cagle visited Lakeland in 1936 he found that everything he wanted or needed was within easy walking distance." In 1984-1985 Parkway Drive was built along SR 441 providing much-needed open space for downtown while still containing many businesses associated with that corridor such as IHOP/Chili’s Pizza/, Radio Shack/, Sears & Roebuck/, JBL/AquaPura loudspeakers etc... Today River Walk Blvd continues downriver past FM 527 just south of Interstate 95 until terminating near Clearwater Marina where it joins US 17

Lakeland, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 13,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The area now known as Lakeland was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The town was founded by Captain John A. Eustis on a tract of land he purchased from the Seminole Tribe in 1823. Captain Eustis named his new community after Lord Byron's home country of England and set about building a wharf and other infrastructure to support trade with indigenous peoples and Spanish colonists who had established missions in this region since the 16th century. In 1841, Secretary of War James Kenedy recommended that Congress create an additional military post at Fort Brooke on Cape Coral Bay in order to protect shipping lanes between Cuba and Alabama along the Gulf Coast during times of piracy or insurrection against Spain. General Carlos Licona objected to this move because it would put his forces under military occupation; he suggested that instead Congress fund a navy lieu at Key West so that vessels could be searched while underway without being boarded or captured by pirates or their crews, which he thought would deter such behavior from ever happening again A group of local businessmen formed the Lakeland Land Company to purchase tracts of land east of present-day downtown for farming development; they named their venture after Byron's birthplace—Albany—New York City. The company began construction on what would become Buchanan Road (now US 1) in 1845 and opened for business on July 4, 1846. By 1860, over 100 businesses filled what is now downtown including several banks, two hotels, four grocery stores and six breweries . In 1865 it became apparent that increased cotton production throughout Tampa Bay was leading to water shortages; accordingly, President Andrew Johnson ordered General Samuel Tilden Baker to send Corps Engineer Lieutenant Colonel George Pickering with authority to survey possible solutions including draining wetlands near Lake Glades & investing money into canals projects designed to move water from west Palm Beach Harbor into inland waterways like Well Creek & Clearwater Creek
