Lakeland is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 57,514 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Palm Beach County and the most populous city on the Jupiter-Fort Lauderdale area of South Florida. The area that now comprises Lakeland was first inhabited by Osage Indians and then by Spanish colonists in the 16th century. The town site was chosen because of its strategic location between two navigable rivers: the Jupiter River near what is nowWest Palm Beach and Longboat Key on Biscayne Bay. By 1875, however, land had been acquired by Major George Washington Tucker III who named it Lakeland after his father General George Washington Tucker IV (1784-1846). In 1893, developers started developing what would become Fort Worth Park; they obtained title to 1/2 mile (0.8 km) of swampy land east of present day North Drive and built an amusement park thereon called "The World's Columbian Exposition". When that exposition closed in 1903 due to financial difficulties, developer Adolphus Busch donated 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land along Broward Boulevard just east of Interstate 95 for use as a public park with a swimming pool and tennis courts among other amenities However this gift did not lead to additional development until 1904 when entrepreneur Hjalmar Schacht offered him 1/3 acre (0.30 km2) from south side of Broward Boulevard at Northwest 17th Avenue for $5 per year This offer led to further donations from various individuals including banker J P Morgan Sr., real estate mogul Developing Society president W F Dunster Sr., grocer Julius Rosenwald Jr., agriculturalist Arthur Ashe & brothers Samuel & Solomon Shapiro - all men who became investors in local citrus groves - resulting in what would become known as Tampa Bay Park District #1 . On July 12nd 1907 President William McKinley dedicated Tampa Bay Park District #1 with an address given by Governor John A Gilded Cage – himself one hundred percent owner – followed by baseball game between American Federation OF Colored Men players & American Red Cross workers billed as "A Game Of Good Will" With no major league team playing here during those years until 1912 when baseball began back at Yankee Stadium thanks largely to Father Leo Maggiore’s donation ($500), there were calls for more parking spaces but nothing came about until 1925 when developer H J Glidden offered 3 acres (10 hectares) north of US Highway 98 / I-95 for $5 per capita plus interest At this time both Glidden businesses were operated out of his house located off NW Second Street next door to Farmers Union Bank before he sold them both interests in 1938 To make room for Glidden’s new minor league baseball stadium some orchard trees were cut down around 1929

In 1928, it became a city under the name of Gainesville after being annexed from Lake Wales by then-city president Willard Cosby III and mayor Wanda Gaynor Cobb. On December 1, 1990, Gainesville merged with Lakeland to form one larger city with an estimated population of 24,000 people. In 2006, Lakeland's economy was classified as "socially active", which means that its main economic activity is tourism or other cultural attractions such as arts and music events
Lakeland was first settled in 1836 by the Seminoles. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who helped lead the Seminole War against Spanish America. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and commerce. In 1868, a railroad was built through Lakeland and it became an important commercial center. In 1907, Lakeland became a city and has continued to grow since then.
