In 1865, US General William Troup landed his army at Lakeland after being ordered to march southward towards Mobile Bay. When he learned that Confederate General Simon Bolivar had withdrawn from Atlanta to join Lee during the Civil War (1861-1865), Troup decided to retreat back upriver towards Tampa instead of fighting another battle on open ground against Confederate troops under Bolivar’s command. As he reached town limits near today’s Zephyrhills neighborhood – home of Walt Disney World – he realized that his army was surrounded by Union troops commanded by Major General Garnett Ewing Jr.. Troup retreated all the way back upriver before finally surrendering on July 4th of 1865. At this pointFort Brooke effectively surrendered its garrison of around 1200 soldiers plus civilians including women and children who were taken prisoner along with their suppliesand equipment (). The Fort Brooke Military Post Museum preserves artifacts from both Fort Brooke itself during its history prior to 1861 (when it was renamed Fort Brooke Military Post) as well as more recent times such as during World War II when it served as a naval air station (). Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Lakeland was made by Spanish colonists in 1763. A post office called "Elvis" was established in 1837 and had a population of just six people. The area became part of the US when Florida was acquired as part of the Treaty of Fort Carlos IV on November 3, 1819. In 1865, General James Ewell led an army from Tampa to attack Mobile Bay and capture Pensacola; this event is often cited as marking the end of Seminole Indian rule over much of central Florida. In 1868, a group of Englishman named Thomson purchased 1,200 acres (500 hectares) east of town on Clearwater Creek for $2 per acre (1/8 hectare). This land became known as Thomson's Battlefield because it served as a training ground for American Union forces during the Second Seminole War. In 1896, electric streetlights were installed along Main Street in downtown Lakeland; they were turned on for the first time that year by Mayor John Cline Sr.. On September 26, 1912, Mrs Florence Kelley married Dr George Waddell at St Peters Catholic Church across from City Hall; their wedding banquet hall still stands today and can accommodate up to 350 guests! On December 12th 1915 local citizens voted 76% yes to annex adjacent unincorporated areas eastward from City Limits into Lakeland until then known only as "Thoroughfare Township". The annexation created muchneeded housing development around downtown which continue to this day with multiple high-rise buildings including One Financial Center and several thousand homes built between 1920-1950 alone! Lakeland experiences significant growth due to its location within Interstate 10's 5 mile radius and access to major highways like I-10/US-441 corridor which have helped contribute To date there has not been one instance where property values have decreased significantly since incorporation into city limits!
