Today Lakeshore remains one of Florida's most popular tourist destinations but faces continued challenges due to infrastructure problems including inadequate sewer systems,[22],[23], rising property values,[24],[25], traffic congestion([26])& decline in job opportunities (.pdf file). Lakeland was once a thriving community with a population of over five thousand. The area now known as Lakeland was first populated by the Timucua Native American Tribe, who named it after their land on the lake. In 1836, Captain John C. Stuart and his crew of the USS Discovery explored the area and discovered what would become Lakeland. They named it for General James K. Polk, who had died in 1835 while leading an expedition to explore Florida's Gulf Coast. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on the water, and by 1850, it had reached its peak with a population of over twelve hundred residents. However, within twenty years of its founding, Lakeland had fallen into disrepair and experienced rapid decline due to heavy development and poverty. By 1930, only fifty remain in the town today.
