Lake Worth was founded in 1892 by Captain John Aiken and his family as an agricultural center on the left bank of the Kissimmee River within present-day Lake Worth Park. In 1912, Aiken donated 1,500 acres (600 ha) to Brevard County for public use under the name of "Aiken Prairie". The Aiken Prairie community developed into what is now Lake Worth. In 1930, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Lake Worth and dedicated two parks in honor of his constituents: Harry S Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt's father Theodore Roosevelt Sr.. The City Beautiful Act of 1933 designated portions of Lake Worth as one continuous urban area with a unified planning system that included zoning regulations for new developments. The city's first mayor was Winton Ellerbe who served from 1935 to 1942; he was succeeded by Hernando DeSoto who served for three terms until 1954 when he became Florida Governor. DeSoto appointed James Meeks as Mayor in 1956 after leaving office as Palm Beach County Sheriff to run for Mayoralty against incumbent Winton Ellerbe; Ellerbe won handily but lost reelection to Meeks in 1958 when DeSoto came back to office as governor after being reelected governor two years earlier without running for office. Ellerbe successfully ran for mayor again in 1960 and 1966 but died before taking office due to a heart attack which would have made him ineligible to serve another term due toFlorida Constitution article V § 5 which limits governors' terms To TWO YEARS IN OFFICE WITHOUT ANY REelection TO THE STATE GOVERNOR). The name "Lake Worth" comes from two different places: one meaning a small body of water in Alachua County and another meaning an area near Fort Myers that was part of the Spanish colony in southeastern Florida in the 1800s. At first, people used either name interchangeably because both were derived from Spanish words for "bay." In 1881, when Lake Worth was incorporealized as a municipality within Hillsborough County, it changed its name to honor Admiral George Dewey's visit to Tampa Bay in 1881. The original municipal building (now the City Hall) was built in 1895 by John Pemberton Crouse and dedicated on December 12th. It served as the temporary home of Hillsborough County until permanent county courthouse could be built at nearby Clearwater Boulevard and Orange Avenue. When statehood arrived in 1907, Tampa had only 10 municipalities; Lake Worth would become one of them soon after due to annexation by Hillsborough County proper. In 1915, then-Mayor Akins recommended that voters repeal an ordinance forbidding open fires during summertime on municipally owned land adjacent to Gulfstream Park Drive because it interfered with agricultural production around the park's periphery which benefited both residents and visitors alike. In agreement with Mayor Akins' recommendation%, referendum passed by wide margins resulting in prohibition Repealed on October 15th 1915! Gulfstream Park Drive became open year-round thereafter...a tribute not just to Mayor Akins but also to civic-minded citizens throughout Hillsborough County who saw fit to respond favorably to their mayor's recommendations! Lake Worth experienced rapid growth following World War II as military personnel stationed there brought prosperity and jobs back into townspeople' lives - including many families who had left during or shortly after the war boom ended..
