In 1819, Congress created Lake Wales County by splitting off Miami County and giving it eastward land that extended into what is now Polk County along with parts of Escambia County to form what is now Alabama Territory. On July 4, 1830, Congress re-established Jacksonville as the seat of government for Lake Wales County following its creation and named it Jacksonville for Major General Andrew Jackson who had commanded both the army that fought against Mexico in1821 and then led an effort to overthrow Mexican rule over Florida two years earlier during the “ Burning of Jacksonville” expedition which ended with Mexican general Pedro Menéndez de Avilés being captured alive.]] In 1834, statehood was granted to Florida by President Andrew Johnson after he won reelection over Vice President Martin Van Buren using a fraudulent process known as “the hung vote” while Van Buren claimed he received more electoral votes than Johnson did because some states refused to count ballots they believed were tainted by fraud.]] By 1840, there were 9 U.S Military installations located outside of Jacksonville including Fort Donelson (established on October 15th), Fort Union (opened on November 5th)and Ft Walton Beach (opened on February 14th).[1]

Lake Wales was first settled in the early 1800s by English colonists. In 1824, the US Congress created Lake Wales as a result of its effort to purchase land east of Tampa Bay for use as an inland waterway. The name "Lake Wales" is derived from Welsh word "Llynwadur", meaning "creek". In 1868, the state of Florida acquired most of what is now eastern Polk County from Georgia. As a result, much of what is now western Lake Wales was added to Florida. This included the towns of Maitland, Daytona Beach, and Titusville. The first post office in Lake Wales was established in 1886. By 1912, there were six villages located on or near the lake: Larkins Ferry, Brunswick Landing, Dunedin Landing, Eustis Landing, and Winfield Springs. In 1925, the state legislature approved plans for a dam across Loch Lomond that would create a reservoir on the west side of the lake. This project led to increased development around the lake and resulted in many businesses being developed along Glassell Drive between State Road 441 and US 1A
